It was not clear what brought Woodard to New York after he purchased a one-way ticket from California, Kelly said, or where he was going when he left a hotel. Woodard checked into the hotel Sunday and checked out about 1:15 p.m. the next day.
He had told his mother he expected to be home Monday.

So this gentleman flew from Los Angeles to New York with a one-way ticket, checked into a hotel, checked out the next day, went to a specific spot, walked up and down the street at that spot for a while- until he was shot by a man waiting for him, who then calmly got back into his car, drove off afterward.
Any guesses? That's weird, y'all.

But yeah, it is really weird. It doesn't sound as though anything was exchanged - it's not as though he was transporting money or drugs or something of value that was stolen - so it seems someone just set him up for murder. One of the LA Times articles said he was thought to be a "promoter" of some kind, so maybe he was lured by a job possibility (which would explain the 1-way ticket)?
