You will never believe what someone is proposing for a Florida college scholarship

Lawmaker proposes dramatic changes to Bright Futures scholarships

A bill filed Wednesday in the Florida House would make drastic changes to the state's popular Bright Futures scholarship program.

The measure, filed by a legislator representing Citrus and Hernando counties, would force students to pay back their scholarship money if they take jobs in other states after graduation.

The bill's sponsor, Rep. Jimmie Smith, R-Lecanto, wrote that the provision is meant to encourage college graduates to remain in Florida and work. But some education leaders and students are raising concerns about a plan that would penalize students for circumstances, such as job availability, that are often beyond their control.

Florida lawmakers have been debating reforms to the state-funded, merit-based Bright Futures program. But changes in recent years have largely centered on student eligibility.

In spite of the fact that its presidential votes went for Obama, Republicans are running the state.

A DU'er got me hooked up with a job that paid minimum wage. It was cool because I also bought one of their old trucks off them for next to nothing.

Glad I'll never have to job hunt again

In Florida, the networks are so tight that a kid can't get a decent job unless they know someone that knows someone. The only hope for many of them is to get out of this 1984 state to get experience somewhere else. Then they can come back through a national promotion or lateral move. They will also have the experience to give them a chance to compete against the number of older people who come down to semi retire.

The Network is where the good jobs are handed out and if you aren't plugged into the Network you're not getting a decent job.

Once they do I'm sure it will be easier to challenge it. I know it is imperative if we're going to return to a fair society. What isn't fair is for them to continue operating in secret. The beauty of exposing them is that it will cut into the true way that Republican policies operate. They say one thing, all the while doing something entirely different.

You had me all screwed up for something several notches higher on the nut-o-meter.

I thought at least it would have some theocracy or something completely stupid rather than just cruelty that has some form of shark minded sense. They want to keep their graduates in state, makes sense brain flight has to be a concern but rather than sugar they went uncut vinegar. Of course they are too stupid to consider folks might need to get a job, maybe even in their field.

They can write off a good percentages when kids realize they can't make it in Florida, and have to move out to find work.
