Is it me, or are the old songs sung by aged rock stars a slower tempo?

I noticed it with the Stones and the Who, and now Billy Joel is singing and it's so SLOW....I remember that song being peppy.

(A comment from my inner struggle to determine if aged rock stars should keep going or hang it up)

However, in this case, I think it is the same thing that happened during the 9-11 concert, rock stars tone down stuff so as not to appear too happy at a solemn occasion. Bon jovi toned down their version of "living on a prayer" back on 9-11, and keep in mind they were considered hard rock at the time.

Even Santana had another guitarist to help do the heavy lifting when I saw him last year. It was still one of the top 3 shows I've ever seen.

I noticed the same thing at work when I lit people like Benny Goodman, they'd slowed down in comparison to their recordings from their heyday.

So yeah, it happens. It's the price we pay for hearing the real thing when we're not kids any more, ourselves.

And that's why I struggle with it. There are bands I loved that I wouldn't go see live now because it would ruin the memory. Or I'd just wear a blindfold.

Spoiler alert: humor.

I have my own suggestion: The Band - The Night They Drove Old Dixie ... to the Nursing Home.

their performances don't sound like the recordings they made 40 years ago?! The talent, and mind-blowing musicianship is still there. They're not trying to sound like they did back then, why in the hell would we expect them to?

Each performance is different. They've performed some of those songs a thousand times, and each time they have to make that interpretation relevant and meaningful. They did "Teenage Wasteland". Do you think any of those guys are even TRYING to pretend they still have any teenage angst? Of course not. So an aged rock star still rocking out with everything he DOES still have to give it, is still something awesome.

Especially when the music they wrote 40 years ago is the product supremely talented songwriting. Iconic still, without being dated.

So effing what he can't hit the high notes anymore. Can't you appreciate the performance for the talent that's still so evident?

Actually I fell asleep early and missed the concert, that's why I'm awake and full of piss and vinegar at 2:30 am.
