Rahm Emanuel Evades Questions Over Mob Ties in Non-Union Deal

from In These Times:

Rahm Emanuel Evades Questions Over Mob Ties in Non-Union Deal
By Anthony Mangini

NBC Chicago reports that Mayor Rahm Emanuel evaded questions over alleged mob ties in a $99 million custodial contract awarded for O'Hare International Airport. The contract went to the non-union employer United Maintenance, a subsidiary of United Services Co., which has connections to several prominent Chicago mob families.

United Services' executive vice president, Paul Fosco, was convicted and imprisoned in 1987 for a "racketeering...scheme to swindle the Laborers Union through manipulations of lucrative benefit plans," the Chicago Tribune reports. Fosco's father, Angelo Fosco, and the infamous Anthony "Big Tuna" Accardo were also tried for their involvement, although both were ultimately acquitted. United Services' owner, Richard Simon, previously ran National Maintenance Facilities with partner William Daddano, Jr., whose father was a notorious enforcer and loan shark for the Chicago mob.

In a press conference last Tuesday, Emanuel insisted that the contract was awarded via a "competitive process," but skirted the issue of mob connections.

Unions were already outraged over the deal; the new contractor, United Maintenance will replace the unionized employees of its predecessor, Scrub, Inc., with low-wage employees. "This is about the mayor taking care of his millionaire friends," SEIU Local 1 secretary-treasurer Laura Rueda told NBC Chicago, "and this is about the mayor taking away middle-class jobs." ...................(more)

Chicago Democrats are very different from the average national Democrat. They have a very low regard for labor and unions and are every bit as disingenuous as Republicans. But they do love our money, it just doesn't mean as much these days because they are getting more elsewhere. That is why I supported Hillary in the first election, this last election my support went to Obama only by default. Labor is like a bastard child to these Chicago thugs.

that. There are some good labor people in the state legislature, but they do not control anything. Illinois leadership is very anti labor in both parties but the Repugs somewhat respected and feared labor, these Dems do not in any way.

they really don't like labor.

The gang down in Springfield have hit labor harder than any Republican ever did. Just check out what's going on in Illinois right now, they're trying to bust the state union AFSCME as we speak, they threw the bargaining contract with AFSCME out, don't forget they control the Senate, the House, and the governor's office. Also look at what they're doing to the pension system. There's not a labor bone in their collective body.

Been there done that, experience is the best teacher..

Democrats who vote for those with the big "D's" after their names and (2) those with the big "D's" after their names, some of whom are willing to cash in by selling out the country to the rich and super-rich.
