SANFORD After Chris Serino, the Sanford police detective who led the investigation into the Trayvon Martin shooting death, wrote the most important police report in the case, he revised it at least four times.
And he made at least one huge change: He initially said George Zimmerman should be charged with second-degree murder then changed course and recommended a charge of manslaughter, according to a prosecutor and new list of evidence.
Serino made all those revisions to the report summarizing his findings during one five-hour stretch on March 13, according to a newly-released evidence list.
In the first two drafts, according to Assistant State Attorney Bernie de la Rionda, Serino wrote that he had probable cause to recommend a second-degree murder charge. Then, over the next hour, he changed the report twice more and in his final version wrote that the evidence supported the lesser charge.

(28,498 posts)Robert Zimmerman, retired Virginia Supreme Court magistrate and father of George Zimmerman, has been making the rounds for media interviews with Fox News exclusively. He's cloaked in shadow, of course, so he isn't identified. In those interviews, he was asked whether the police knew he was a retired magistrate and whether that might have had an impact on their decision to let George Zimmerman go free that night without taking his clothes or keeping his gun, or doing any of the usual investigation that police do when they find a dead kid laying on his stomach with his hands underneath him.
Zimmerman's answer to the question was a denial and not a denial. He said, "No one knew that I was a retired magistrate judge. I didn't mention it to the police. I didn't mention it to the state attorney's office."
How interesting that he would specifically say he didn't mention it, without any denial that he spoke to them. Do you think that the police might have known who George Zimmerman was before they showed up that night, simply because he had called them 48 times in the past two months? Do you think it's possible, maybe even probable, that George Zimmerman had bragged about having a daddy who was a retired magistrate judge, or that he might have mentioned it that night when his daddy came to the police station to talk to the state attorney and police but didn't mention that he was a retired judge?
It seems to me, as it did Lawrence O'Donnell, that Zimmerman's statement that he didn't "mention it" to the police or city attorney implies that he was speaking to them. That night. And whether he mentioned it or not, I'd say it's more probable than not that they knew who Zimmerman was, and who his daddy was.

(2,730 posts)I did not know who his father was, but I thought that I heard somewhere Zimmerman had a friend that worked as a law Enforcement officer and that they practiced at shooting ranges together?

I think a federal agency should look into the cases that he has passed on in the past.

(7,403 posts)But I want to know all contacts in the chain. Not just who Serrino was in contact with but also the people the contact(s) contacted.
It is also likely that Robert Zimmerman had a circle of friends that included people in the police chain of command that in turn made phone calls.

(46,747 posts)Process is undermined by higher ups pulling strings. And then, when ordinary people come asking why procedures weren't followed they are given the most ludicrous explanations. In the Trayvon case, however, they got caught because they went too far. It got national attention and that's usually the death knell for the backwater methods.

(1,635 posts)Zimmerman was told STOP FOLLOWING HIM, POLICE ARE ON THE WAY!. Instead he drove up to where Travon was, and got out of his truck! Zimmerman belongs in JAIL.
I've heard from others complaining...they are not using a current pic of Travon...he's older than that now. They are hiding his brutality. Cuz he's older? So they did use another pic, current. What the hell does that have to do, with Zimmerman getting out of his truck? That is NOT STANDING YOUR GROUND. Zimmerman put himself in that situation, for NO reason.
Zimmerman belongs behind bars!!!! He's a murderer who though he posessed a license to kill! We surely don't need future officers like this either on our streets!

(12,804 posts)Zimmerman.
Anyway, punching a guy is no motive for killing him. Martin weighed 100 lbs less than Zimmerman and Zimmerman stalked Martin.

(4,822 posts)Zimmerman was the aggressor and stalked Trayvon who was minding his own business making Trayvon feel threatened, Trayvon was scared and attempted to protect himself and Zimmerman killed him anyway. If not for Zimmermans actions none of it would have happened.

(14,755 posts)I don't think that Martin even had a chance to hit the POS. I think the wounds were inflicted after the shooting in order to make it look like POS may have had a story other than what really happened.

(22,336 posts)like the dispatcher told him to, no one would have ever gotten hurt.
You don't have the right to chase and harrass someone for no good reason, then go after them, and then shoot them when they try to protect themselves. That's not "standing your ground." It's baiting and egging someone on looking for an excuse to shoot them.
I question whether that picture is authentic, because it looks so different from other photos we KNOW came from that day, but honestly even if it is, I don't care. It doesn't tell me Zimmerman had a right to shoot anyone. He should have left Trayvon Martin alone when he was told to.

(13,409 posts)So you see a bloody picture of Zimmerman and that means that he's innocent? How about Trayvon Martin had every fucking right to defend himself against that psychopath killer with a fucking gun? I'm having a hard time believing you're for real, but somehow I think you might be.

Not sure what this has to do with the Zimmerman case, since Zimmerman is the one on trial and not the police.

You don't believe that Zimmerman's arrest report has anything to do with Zimmerman's case?

(37,573 posts)After all, Zimmerman is not being charged with "tampering with a police report". Nor does whatever happened in the course of filling out and modifying said report change in the slighest the actual events that transpired between Martin and Zimmerman.
What happened on the street is what is being adjudicated, Even if Zimmerman's dad called up and said "dammit, I am a retired court officer from Virginia, and you had better not charge my son with anything" and then after the cops got done rolling on the floor laughing their a$$es off at such a strident demand from a non-entity, and then got up and modified the report, that also does not change what actually happened on the street, nor does it provide the slightest bit of evidence as to what happened on the street.

(27,993 posts)One they thought they could pin a lot of their unsolved cases on.
I'm thinking Zimmerman's dad helped them come to that erroneous conclusion.
Once they went down that road, freeing Zimmerman on a Stand Your Ground excuse became appealing and so they over rode the initial suggestions of Chris Serino.

(7,628 posts)More than 2 weeks after the killing, the lead investigator changed his mind about the proper charge while typing at his desk and having his work reviewed by superiors.
Sounds like not everyone agreed with Serino's initial assessment and Serino decided to go along to get along.

(5,412 posts)All the speculation that can be made has been made at this point.
I believe this is a rare case of what happens when two people can rightfully fear for their safety from the other in a place they have a right to be. Martin may have had reason to fear for his safety from Zimmerman, and Zimmerman may have had reason to fear from Martin.
Yes, the police told Zimmerman they "did not need" him to follow Martin, but Zimmerman was under no obligation to follow the dispatcher's suggestion, or even an order for that matter.
We may consider it foolish for Zimmerman to take it upon himself to investigate people he considers suspicious in his neighborhood, but it was not illegal for him to do so.
And Martin was clearly aware of being followed and there was a confrontation between Zimmerman and Martin.
We don't know who initiated the confrontation. We may never know.

(2,730 posts)Zimmerman followed the kid and proceeded to get out of his car to confront the kid. Not only that Zimmerman had a concealed weapon on him. Not only that, Zimmerman has a past history of domestic violence! You can proceed?
Atypical Liberal
(5,412 posts)As I have said before, there is nothing illegal or even wrong about asking someone a stranger in your neighborhood what they are doing there. Note: At face value.
Not only that Zimmerman had a concealed weapon on him.
This is irrelevant. Zimmerman was lawfully carrying a concealed weapon. There is nothing illegal or even wrong about carrying a concealed weapon and asking someone what they are doing.
Not only that, Zimmerman has a past history of domestic violence!
While it does not paint a good picture of Zimmerman's past behavior, it does not necessarily reflect on the events of that night.
Again, I'm waiting for the trial to make any further judgements.
