University Of Kentucky Student's Video Of Confrontation With Police In Dorm Room Goes Viral

Apologies if duplicate. I searched a few times using various keywords.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/12/university-of-kentucky-dorm-video_n_2285055.html

The long and short of this is, the campus police come to a student's dorm room and accuse him of pouring alcohol out of his window. The conversation takes place through an open door, with the student using his foot to keep them from easily opening it all the way. They ask to come in. He refuses. Everyone involved is acting like a complete jerk, especially the student, although I salute him for standing up for his 4th Amendment rights. At about the 5:30 mark the cop pushes the student out of the way and barges in. They search his room and presumably find nothing, as the student mocks them mercilessly for finding his stash of ranch dressing and sweatpants.

After a university investigation, the cop who pushed the student and entered the room first is terminated. Sounds about right.

If I had been the student, and were sure of my rights, I wouldn't have opened the door, I would have just spoken to them through it. (And I would definitely not have cursed and mocked them, it wasn't necessary and was needlessly inflammatory.) I never open a door for a police officer. Had a very bad experience once with an out-of-control policeman, even though I was being unfailingly polite and peppering my responses with "sir." It was so scary that I resolved never again to engage a LEO unless I had to. I respect policemen who do the job appropriately and wish I could tell them apart from the bad ones.

They're allowed to enter dorm rooms during a fire alarm. tridim Dec 2012 #1
That would make sense, although there was no fire alarm in effect here. reflection Dec 2012 #2

Little loophole there. It happened to a friend when I was in college.

It doesn't matter who pulls the alarm.

But if you are saying that the cop could get around the 4th Amendment by pulling the fire alarm, I catch your drift.

We would have never wasted booze like that when I attended the University of Kentucky. Dear God, what are these kids being taught these days?

If I think the cops are coming and I'm trying to quickly get rid of some alcohol, I'm pouring it down the toilet.

Then again, when I went to college (and not at UK) I lived in the cheapest dorm available, and we had community restrooms. Had to walk down the hall to get to a toilet. I wonder if they still have dorms like that? Probably not at UK.

They are in the process of building a bunch of new ones with better bathroom arrangements. I think this guy's dorm is one that is a little older and has the community bathroom situation going on.

Both are mytical animals.

"Good cops" are the ones who tolerate and cover up for the "bad cops."

Aside from that, he was a belligerent punk who I could give two shits about. But belligerent punks have rights like everyone else.
