Minnesota representative and Republican Crazy Caucus chairwoman Michele Bachmann recently amused us all with a loopy conspiracy theory claiming that Hillary Clinton had signed a United Nations resolution that would criminalize free speech.
The theory may be completely unfounded, but it is actually not that unusual for a staunch right-winger. Although many Republicans love to mock the U.N. as a weak, feckless organization, paranoid conspiracy theories about the U.N. are nonetheless a cottage industry in the Republican Party. Peddling this brand of paranoia has fueled the careers of elected officials, pundits, and even one former U.N. ambassador.
Here are five Republican politicians who actively promote some of the wildest conspiracy theories about the United Nations:
John Cornyn, Michele Bachmann, Rick Santorum, Ron Paul and Ted Cruz plus, as a bonus, Chip Rogers And The Georgia GOP.

(25,699 posts)You really had no clue about Paul? Huh.
Maybe I'm just "lucky" - I suffered through several years of watching a goofy but cozy conspiracy forum (I was one of the "skeptics," fun times) turn into a frothing Paultopian enclave...
But yeah, I can't look at the guy without remembering the aftermath of my saint bernard eating a plastic baggie. "Sack of shit" indeed.

(53,986 posts)I knew he was a conspiracy nut, and an anti-Semite, but I had no idea the level of his racism or homophobia. I am likely not the only one to whom this comes as a surprise, because there have been a number of "progressives" who continually support him.

(25,699 posts)Those are the two lures for what progressives jump on his bandwagon... I haven't met any who stick with the guy after they learn about his other positions, though.

(53,986 posts)It was his banking rants that clued me into his anti-Semitism, but I really had no idea he was such a nasty racist or prolific homophobe. I had never heard them. I still find it interesting people see him as "progressive."
