Wheelchair-Bound Preteen Held by TSA After Traces of Explosives Found
A Texas mom was dumbfounded and angry when her preteen, wheelchair-bound daughter was left sobbing at the security gate at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport when reps from the Transportation Security Administration detected traces of explosive on her hand.
Shelbi Walser, 12, has brittle bone disease, and was flying to Tampa, Fla., to receive treatment on Sunday when she was randomly selected for an explosives screening on her way through security. Tammy Daniels, Walsers mother, said that her daughter tested positive for explosives when a screener swabbed Walsers palms and fingers.
Daniels was separated from her daughter for an hour while the situation was sorted out. All she was able to do was film the incident and her embarrassed daughter crying.
Its O.K., you didnt do anything wrong, were going to get you on your way, an official can be heard saying to the girl on the video.
Speaking with ABC affiliate WFAA, Walser said that she has no idea how the traces of explosive got on her.

Don't like it? Don't fly. If just one person out of the millions that fly gets control of a plane or brings it down, many will die.
Safety first.

(38,326 posts)There's a few that would test positive as "explosives," nitroglycerin, which is used as a heart medicine, being the most obvious.
But that's sure as hell no excuse for separating this kid from her mother and treating her like a potential bomber.

(78,249 posts)Two of my favorite human beings have osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease). Both are adults and both are under 4 feet tall.
A 12-year-old with OI is about as much of a threat as, say, an elderly nun.
edit: Also, a Colbert-style Wag Of The Finger to the reporter for using "wheelchair-bound". Shelbi "uses a wheelchair".

(51,084 posts)Are they qualified to do the tests?
How random are the tests? Are they whenever they feel like doing the tests like when they are not swamped or they want to avoid doing something else?
I'm predicting that sometime in the future the passengers will get so outraged that they will perform a strip search and cavity search on the TSA in the airport. Video tape it and put it on the internet. Save it to their smartphone and every time they go through an airport show it to other passengers while TSA look on wondering how do I not upset the passengers.
