One day, I read an LBN on DU about a man who'd been run over by teenagers trying to escape from a shoplifting spree in a stolen car -- terrible, of course. But the next thing I know, I'm at a DU thread started by someone who knew the victim. It added an entirely new dimension to the meaning of "fleshing out" a news story.
More recently, America's Most Wanted did a story about a young woman at a local TV station who'd been murdered. There was a tape of the anchorwoman tearfully praising the victim and asking for help with the police investigation while the anchorman just sat there, far too chocked up to say anything at all. And these were the professionals -- after the commercial break, they probably just went on to the latest reports on the Gulf War.
Oh, and did I mention that my sister is a middle school principal?

(81,466 posts)Maybe it's up to US, even us here on DU, to take the first step? Nobody else seems interested in showing leadership.
Ed Shultz has a segment on now in which they're focusing on the gun lobby, and he's asking - WHAT DO WE DO ABOUT THE NRA? And he mentioned how Mothers Against Drunk Driving made it uncool to drink and drive. WE HAVE TO DO THAT ABOUT GUNS. We have to sour the taste of the NRA and make it a thoroughly uncool organization. Just the same way the bad guys did to ACORN.
