One day, I read an LBN on DU about a man who'd been run over by teenagers trying to escape from a shoplifting spree in a stolen car -- terrible, of course. But the next thing I know, I'm at a DU thread started by someone who knew the victim. It added an entirely new dimension to the meaning of "fleshing out" a news story.

More recently, America's Most Wanted did a story about a young woman at a local TV station who'd been murdered. There was a tape of the anchorwoman tearfully praising the victim and asking for help with the police investigation while the anchorman just sat there, far too chocked up to say anything at all. And these were the professionals -- after the commercial break, they probably just went on to the latest reports on the Gulf War.

Oh, and did I mention that my sister is a middle school principal?

all of them. My worst triggers are when kids are hurt. I want to go back and somehow save all of those babies...all of them.

I really don't get this at all, why these little ones?

This is breaking me.

I hope her children are okay. Please send my condolences to whomever it is.

She must be in shock...

This just cuts way too close to home this time. Everyone was on edge today at the Torrington, CT school I subbed in today. The school my kids attend in Connecticut had all the kids sent to the cafeteria at the end of the day and all the kids were walked very carefully to their buses. It is every parent's worst nightmare.

I know nothing today. But maybe send a message of love and sorrow sometime in the next few days? I'm just sick over the whole thing.

Make sure you never go to bed mad. Tell them you love them before you put them on the bus. Take nothing for granted.

my daughter (15) and I have been at each other's throats for about a week. I printed out your post, told her the back story, and we both had a wonderful hug with 4 damp eyes involved. My thoughts are with you and all the others who are affected. Our political foes are right about one thing - we do need to take this country back!
Peace and love, friends.

I can't even imagine this horror. Even though my own brother was killed by an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound, at least it was unintended. It's unfathomable that someone could do this on purpose.

Maybe it's up to US, even us here on DU, to take the first step? Nobody else seems interested in showing leadership.

Ed Shultz has a segment on now in which they're focusing on the gun lobby, and he's asking - WHAT DO WE DO ABOUT THE NRA? And he mentioned how Mothers Against Drunk Driving made it uncool to drink and drive. WE HAVE TO DO THAT ABOUT GUNS. We have to sour the taste of the NRA and make it a thoroughly uncool organization. Just the same way the bad guys did to ACORN.

You always pray it won't be anyone you know or anyone anyone you know knows. Which is normal if unfair.

The mental image of that terrified parent racing out of the workplace, even though I have no details for the image but terror, will be with me forever now.

Sending love and condolences to lapislzi and all the moms and dads. I have three kids and I really feel this, but I cannot imagine fully the pain and horror the families are feeling. They need to know we're all behind them.
