Jay Carney: "Not the day" to talk about gun control

There has to be a better way to phrase this sentiment.

Responding to Friday morning’s tragic elementary school shooting in Connecticut, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters today that President Obama was informed of the incident at 10:30AM and will “receive regular updates as the day progresses.”

But Carney refused to address how the gun laws contribute to the high numbers of mass shootings or what can be done to prevent these all-too-common events. The press secretary insisted that it is inappropriate to discuss the matter:

Q: The President made a campaign promise to work to renew the assault weapons ban. Why won’t you stand up here today and say that that remains a commitment of his?

CARNEY: It does remain a commitment of his. What I said is, today is not the day, I believe as a father, a day to engage in the usual Washington policy debates. I think that that they will come, but today of not that day, especially as we are awaiting more information about the situation in Connecticut.

4. Today is NOT the day for the White House to talk gun policy. The focus should be on the families...

the bodies have not even been removed from the school yet.

The gun issue will not go away anytime soon, tomorrow is a better day for the WH to focus on policy than today.

One of Obama's strengths is that he doesn't have knee-jerk reactions. It's best to sort everything out, offer support for the victims and families. Later, when we know more, we can seek out solutions.

The Whit House response was perhaps the best one.

3. Is there a numerical target involved, Jay - kind of like hitting your sales goal for a yearly bonus?

30 dead? 45? 100?

Do the murdered children mean Bonus Points for hitting that target and ringing the "Now We Can Talk About It" bell at the top of the pole on the midway next to the tent holding the World's Fattest Man?

Jesus Christ.
