However, pro-gun advocates don't seem to have anything to offer outside of either (a) everybody should carry a gun, and/or (b) these events are the price of respecting the 2nd amendment.

Whatever the solution might be, (a) and (b) will do absolutely nothing to reduce gun violence. Until we get past that, one way or another, these horrific shootings are going to continue.

But that isn't enough to stop this type of tragedy from occurring. St. Ronnie eviscerated the American mental health system in the 80's, and unless we create something to detect and treat those members of the populace, we will keep on seeing this type if horrific scene,

My family had more than sufficient means to provide for a relatives psychiatric and substance abuse medical needs. He didn't want it and with the assistance of pro bono lawyers obtained restraining orders against the family. These assholes ran a whole practice around keeping the families of the mentally ill from trying to help.

This wasn't an access issue, this was a "you're fucking crazy" issue and it needs to be much, much easier to get people permanently committed.

This is a rare point of consensus for the left and right. The left believes that forcing treatment on the violent and insane is an infringement on their gawd given right to be violent and insane and the right is completely indifferent - they just don't want to pay for it.
