What we know about the weapon the CT shooter used.

The massacre in Connecticut that's taken the lives of at least 29 people was reportedly perpetrated with a .223 caliber rifle, according to NBC.

The caliber .223 is pretty common in the civilian side of weaponry, but it's basically the same caliber of the NATO 5.56 round the military uses (just a little bit more umph on the military version).

The shooter was using one Sig Sauer and one Glock, according to CNN. Glock doesn't make an assault style rifle, but Sig Sauer is the Rolls Royce of assault rifle producers.

The weapons that use .223 caliber ammunition range from bolt-action rifles to the more "assault" type semi-automatic rifles. New Jersey and Connecticut both have strict gun laws in place banning their own definitions of "assault" rifles — but a simple trip across the border into Pennsylvania can secure weapons illegal in both those aforementioned states, or one can just buy weapons on the web.

that are capable of killing dozens of people in seconds.

I see nothing in this article promoting these weapons.

• The gunman was reportedly wearing all black, a mask and a bullet-proof vest while carrying Glock and Sig Sauer 9mm handgun. Officials tell CBS News that a .223 caliber rifle was found in his car, and that all of the guns were legally purchased by Ryan Lanza.

Did he go back out to his car after the shooting or during? I thought he was killed in the schoolhouse?

This shows how valuable a backround check is. Little to none.

the point is that people are saying which weapon was used to do what... and no one fucking knows. it doesn't MATTER what weapon he used to do what. people see a tragedy that hits their little sweet spot and can't wait to jump all over it without fact-fucking-one!

it is disgusting ... on both sides of the gun-control debate.

This is the gun the Beltway Sniper used in DC.

Because it will need to be part of the discussion

A six shooter, like a 38 special, even with faster loading devices, is far less lethal potentially than a semi auto, firing a round designed to hunt humans.
