It's the glorification of guns by many Americans and, if not more importantly, the glorification of gun violence by those Americans. This does not mean that everyone who is "pro-gun" falls into this category. I assume our "pro-gun" DUers do not. But there is a small, albeit prominent sect of our society that seems to think this sort of action is acceptable, if not courageous on paper. And a small despicable sect of society that gets into power and promotes this fanaticism publicly.

There are those out there who socially ENABLE people to take such abhorrent actions. I'd point to countless Republican anti-Obama bumper stickers. To the militarization of the Tea Party movement. To all those who think that the glorification of violence is acceptable. To all those who think that gun ownership makes you more powerful or in some way makes up for the fact that society may have shit on you. That all these things and more are mainstream accepted in the US. That's what I find most disgusting about today. That everything that happened today could have been prevented. And that the idea of such an action even came across the mind of the sick individual who carried it out. Yet, we as a society enable it and accept that others are enabling it.

(18,186 posts)Some of the info is wrong here as to the father being shot, but Amy Davidson asks an important question:
"The contrast here is not only between the civility of the children and the cruelty of the shooter, but between what was asked of them at this moment and how little the public and elected officials ask of themselves when it comes to doing something about gun violence. *snip* How do we find ourselves asking kindergarteners to be more courageous in the face of a gunman than politicians are in the face of the gun lobby?"
Amy Davidson: you hit the nail on the head.
