Remorseful man admits causing Reno fire

An elderly man discarding fireplace ashes accidentally touched off the brush fire that raged south of Reno, destroying 29 homes and forcing thousands of people to flee the flames, authorities said.

The man admitted his role by improperly disposing of the ashes at his home.

Investigators already had tracked the origin of the fire to a location in East Lake on the north end of the Washoe Valley, where the man lives about 20 miles south of downtown Reno.

I feel sorry for him and I have a level of respect for him for owning up to his mistake. Someone who has enough decency in them own up to creating the disaster has to be feeling a great deal of pain over the loss of life and property they've caused. It was foolish, and it had horrible consequences, but it was an accident.

I have family there, and I was scared to to death when I couldn't get in touch with them. So, it's not as easy for me to feel compassion for this man as I usual.. Yet I still do.

Tell me how you really feel.

I'm kind of familiar with wildfires. They're not like a house fire where you can trace it back to a specific point of origin, rather than a general one. The odds of them tracing them back to his trash can, in those winds, were pretty much nil.

It's like having a constant stress over your head. Not a pleasant experience in any way.

The odd thing is they don't usually have such fires there this early in the season.

But it died down before any serious property damage or fatalities.

I tip my hat to you, as you obviously have never done anything stupid in your life.

It must be an interesting feeling.

This wasn't a tossed cigarette, an improper campfire, or arson.

In most places and at most times, simple carelessness won't have such disastrous consequences.

Let's not lock him up with Captain Schettino just yet.

Answer: because everyone does something stupid every now and then. Normally the consequences are not as dire, but Jesus, you don't grasp the whole concept of "intent".

Negligence is a civil tort.

There are very few criminal statutes where the mens reus is mere negligence. "Criminal Negligence" typically involves wanton or reckless behavior.

I understand negligence well enough to have aced Torts I.

There is nothing the criminal justice system has to offer this guy than what he's already going through, I'd bet.
