"So I知 a teacher..."

So I’m a teacher. According to conservative orthodoxy, I’m a parasite on the public’s dime who is only interested in indoctrinating the precious children of America into communism or atheism or whatever. I can’t be trusted to have any control over the curriculum I teach. I can’t be trusted to fairly and impartially evaluate my students, let alone my colleagues. I can’t be trusted to have collective bargaining rights. I can’t be trusted to have an objective view of governmental policy when it comes to my own profession.

But they’ll trust me to keep a gun in a room filled with children.

Even the cynicism-producing neurons of my prefrontal cortex can’t wrap themselves around this kind of stupid bullshit.

You are so rights about how fucking nuts the right wing has become. The only thing you left out is that the conservatives gutted all the Voc Ed classes in the early 1990's that were actually teaching kids skills that could lead them to a trade where they could actually make a decent living. But that might have lead to more students going on to join unions; god forbid.

Back to the guns, imagine you're a teacher, wearing a gun, and then you try to break up a students fight. Gee, no cause for alarm there! Do these idiots not know that most gun deaths are due to accidents? It is time as a nation to collectively say to the NRA: ENOUGH! We are no longer going to allow you to own these puppet wimps in Congress who cower at the mere mention of sensible guns control laws.

Sorry about the rant, but this latest incident has really shaken me. How can we as a nation put up with this insanity any longer?

As a college instructor, I am entrusted with "indoctrination," curriculum, evaluations, course design, textbook preparation, etc. However, I would not trust educators with a gun. Mental health is not something we can rely on. We can be exposed to drugs, bioactive chemicals, or have physical problems altering mental function. I think I am wise enough to know I don't want educators to pack lethal weapons.

a right-wing fundy type of teacher, then you would be a great shooter and would be the type of teacher that the tea baggers would approve of. That is, as long as you teach creationism, christianity as the only religion, and avoid any scientific method topics.

further thought, I remember Ms. Rainey in kindergarten, touching us on the head with that damn stick that had the little foil star on the end to wake us up from our naps (they still do the nap thing? WHY IN THE HELL did they have us stop doing afternoon naps? School went downhill after that for me).

I guess she could just use the butt of her 9mm, if these people have their way...

my grandmother crocheted my blanket for that- it had my first name on it. I wish my parents hadn't gotten rid of it when I got older. It was red and blue.

Or maybe just an AK strapped across their back?

But I digress.

I was re-reading an article earlier on NY Times site, the Island Where People Forget To Die. Ikaria, or Icaria, is an island off Greece where people have exceptional longevity.

One of the things they attribute that to is frequent naps, at least 5 times a week. Said virtually no one wears a watch and most of the clocks are broken

One cool part - they said they care little to nothing about money. At Christmas, if anyone has money they pool it and buy food for others. Said they are about each other.

Damn. If they had snow I might move there.

We gotta all be busy worker bees...all souped up on caffeine and ready to serve our masters from dawn to dusk! Gotta teach that discipline early in life.

I cannot believe how they treat teachers, what they put the teachers through, how much teachers give yet how little they receive, and now you're supposed to be handy with guns? Stupid bullshit is putting it nicely.

Anybody can walk into our school. There is no intercom. Parents can be found wandering into the building looking for their children. A notice saying 'report to the front office' is unheeded.

What could possibly go wrong? a gun on the hip to be taken away by a big, hulking teen-age boy football player with raging hormones. or taken away by several teenage hulking boys with raging hormones.

Critical thinking is not real big with creationist nut-whacks.
