Man arrested after firing 50 shots in California mall parking lotPublished December 16, 2012
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. A man was arrested Saturday after firing about 50 shots in the parking lot of a Southern California shopping mall, forcing a lockdown of stores crowded with holiday shoppers.
Marcos Gurrola, 42, of Garden Grove was taken into custody by bicycle police officers patrolling around the open-air Fashion Island mall around 4:30 p.m., police spokeswoman Cathy Lowe said. She said he fired into the air and onto the ground in the parking lot near a Macy's department store.
No one was injured, but the gunfire caused panic, coming just a day after a gunman killed 26 children and adults at a Connecticut elementary school, and days after a deadly mall shooting in Oregon. Some of the shoppers in California on Saturday said they ran, screaming as they looked for a safe shelter....

(6,428 posts)Thankfully I was at work miles away when it happened otherwise I might have been pretty scared. There's also a link to a youtube video some guy took of the guy shooting his gun but for some reason I can't get it to work on my computer. It works on my phone but it's too small to see anything.
/sigh.. what the heck is going on in this country? People are going nuts... in droves

This plot was pretty disturbing, the guy was going to lure as many students as he could into the school auditorium, and then chain lock the exit doors so no one could escape, and then start a killing spree with guns. The teen had been studying the columbine shooting apparently for inspiration.
I'm starting to think this 2012 supposed end of world business that has been widely reported on in the media is bringing the crazies out in force.

(90,714 posts)Thank God, thank God, thank God it turned out to be a false alarm for now. A mother called the school to say her estranged husband told her on the phone that he was coming to school with a gun to kill their two kids. Turns out he was still in Texas or someplace equally far from California, but while they were finding that out, cops tore over to the school.
I hope to God the cops here got the cops in Texas to ream him a new one -- er -- fully investigate him.

Consider yourself successfully terrorized.
We need the kind of change that does not come quickly. I've been pointing this out for a while now, but I'm just a 1200-post nobody. Now that Morgan Freeman has chimed in with these same points, maybe we can get busy. There is definitely effective action you can take today... as in immediately.
I don't want to live in the sort of world we are making and I don't think you do, either. Fear culture sucks.

(28,876 posts)FYI, I lost my father this week (not something you would know). I have a young son who would accompany me shopping. I've had about as much loss as I can handle imagining right now. With my own grief, the images of those poor babies in CT and the Oregon mall shooting swirling around in my mind, I just can't right now. So yeah, the terrorists have won this battle.

(4,112 posts)the more likely it is that another event will quickly follow. Right after 9/11, my company hired this man, a renowned forensic psychiatrist, to train us (Senior HR execs) in how to recognize situations that could blow up, either literally or figuratively, and this was the key lesson he taught us. Years ago, he used to be on all the cable news shows after these shootings, a lot like Clint van Zandt et al, and made a conscious decision to stop that practice as he believed it added to the likelihood that another mass casualty event would follow.
