BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Birmingham police have identified the suspect they say shot an officer and two St. Vincent's hospital employees early Saturday morning.
Sgt. Johnny Williams says that Jason Letts, 38 of Jemison brought a gun into the hospital. Letts was fatally wounded and pronounced dead at the scene. Officers say the shooting happened on the fifth floor of the hospital around 4 a.m.
Sgt. Johnny Williams with the Birmingham police says Letts shot an officer and two hospital employees as they were coming off the elevator. A second police officer came around the corner and shot and killed the gunman. Sgt. Williams says the injuries to the officer and the employees are not life-threatening. The victims were taken to UAB Hospital. Police have not released their names.
Investigators have not said what the man was doing before the shooting. They are hoping any surveillance video taken on the floor will help them determine what happened. A hospital spokeswoman says employees go through security training to deal with incidents like this. One hospital worker says a "Code Silver" was called across the intercom this morning. He says "Code Silver" means there is harm or threat with a weapon.
