There Are Two Political Issues I Hate - Guns and Abortion
Because both drive people absolutely crazy and make it next to impossible to have a serious, reasoned discussion.
And both feature similar, stunningly inaccurate arguments.
"If you banned/restricted access to _____ then they wouldn't happen."
If you overturn Roe v. Wade, then you could end abortions once and for all. Overlooking the fact that abortions happened before Roe became law, as well as the fact that abortions would continue to happen, they'd just be done below the radar and much more dangerously.
If you overturn the 2nd Amendment, then you could end gun violence once and for all. Overlooking the fact that prohibition has never worked in this country, and would result in a rise in black-market gun sales (not to mention the feasibility of confiscating the 300 million currently-owned firearms).
It is rather ironic that both sides of the ideological spectrum use the same theory, even though they obviously don't realize they're doing it.
I've even seen calls on DU for the use of shock-tactics similar to the one's used by anti-abortion protesters. If you're getting your inspiration for political action from the anti-choice nut jobs, then you need to re-think your approach.
