Salon has an excellent article listing the most obvious waste by the military.
*The Pentagon runs 234 golf courses - keeping the cost undisclosed. More are not even on the list.
* 963 generals and admirals - 2/3 more than needed. And they have expensive perks, along with a strong sense of entitlement regarding those perks. About 70% of retired 3 and 4 star generals move through the pipeline to defense industry giants like Lockheed Martin.
*According to a Washington Post investigation, each top commander has his own C-40 jet, complete with beds on board. Chefs, drivers, security guards, secretaries and people to shine their shoes and iron their uniforms.

(53,475 posts)... I soon learned that there were no available tee-times for low-ranking enlisted personnel. Major bummer, pun intended. At Andrews AFB outside Washington DC even Captains and Majors had a tough time getting on the course. The place was over-run with O-6's and above. And that was almost 40 years ago.
I also found that at most bases there was a base swimming pool that was open only to enlisted personnel and their dependents. All of them. The poor (and much smaller) officer corp was confined to the "officers only" pools. Fortunately, they tended to be newer, larger and better equipped.

(153,169 posts)one of the girls was new on base and we had talked her into going (hey it was July in Texas, 100 degrees and a fair amount of alcohol was involved). Well that poor gal, that was how she met her commanding officer. She was hysterical, and I remember yelling at her to STOP CRYING! because I knew that would just anger the Major
now ME, I had met him before - I was called in because a Mormon lieutenant had complained about the length of my skirt (I had it, oh, maybe an inch above regulation; give me a break - I was 19 years old). So the major says, "BE ADVISED SOMEONE HAS COMPLAINED ABOUT THE LENGTH OF YOUR SKIRT." So I asked, "So I need to lengthen it?" and he repeated, "BE ADVISED SOMEONE HAS COMPLAINED ABOUT THE LENGTH OF YOUR SKIRT. DISMISSED!!!"

(9,214 posts)I'm sure the military has already taken care of that.
You really think they built the golf courses for the enlisted personnel?

(2,480 posts)I was air force. Even I took up the game. Never had a problem getting a tee time. Maybe if you wanted to go at 0700, but that was for those older early birds.

(373 posts)I headed out to the golf course with some buddies one day a couple years ago.
I was shocked. It was like a class reunion of every E-5 and below I'd seen in SOI.
I kept stopping every ten-fifteen min. to say hey to a buddy or two.
This idea that the military has some sort of guard kicking the enlisted to the curb of the golf course is ridiculous.
Also, the courses are primarily funded by course fees. Shocking, I know!
Let the pearl clutching commence.

(3,576 posts)This country would be one hell of a lot more better off with NO military. We basically had no military leading up to wwII.

(50,560 posts)Golf courses in the military are mostly funded by the players themselves.
If I had to start slashing the military to afford Medicare I would start by getting rid of the $8 billion Missile Defense Agency. Then look hard at ceremonial units, the Thunderbirds, flyovers at sporting events...taxpayer outlays for military golf courses are dwarfed by taxpayer outlays for jets flying over Talladega Superspeedway.

(6,238 posts)If you want to be respected by this country then you better go pick up a gun and kill on command, because to America that is much more important than education. It's disgusting.

(6,238 posts)I am sick and tired of this reverence that is paid to the military in this country. So yes if it comes down to cutting medicare or closing golf courses for the military I would close them all down and not lose a night's sleep.

$14 million annual salary in 2011
Net worth exceeding $100 million, ALL OF IT from the largesse of the American taxpayer.
That's right, he made fourteen million dollars last year and almost every single cent of it was as a result of DOD contracts awarded to the company he is the CEO of - General Dynamics.
His net worth figure comes from information readily available on GD's own website. He holds 1.6 million shares of General Dynamics common stock and equivalents. GD trades in the $60 range.

(125 posts)There were beaches, clubs, golf courses, etc, all for exclusive military use. Some were reserved for officers of a certain rank, some for officers in general, some for the enlisted folks.
The vast majority of these locations have been shut down. If they want to maintain a few for out men and women in uniform, I say its least we cane do.
The cost needs to be kept to a minimum, however.

(5,526 posts)Our generals and admirals have too many perks. it is my opinion that they are already paid enough and if that isn't enough, then the privilege of command should be enough. We have WAY too many generals and admirals and not enough trigger pullers (grunts). I've long felt the military golf courses are a waste of money. The Army, in particular, is good at wasting taxpayers money with needless uniform changes. What they have done with uniforms and headgear in the past 30 years is borderline criminal.
I think officers in general are too pampered. Of course, I say that as a former Army Sergeant ....
