blame this on God being "taken out" of schools.

...and it's not a trick. There are actually millions of Americans who believe this kind of "religion". And they are promoting it by preaching it on the corner and in our public schools, by sending their kids to school wearing these t-shirts. It's like having Cotton Mather in our country in the 21st fucking century! It's legal mental illness. All I can say is God help us...

A few interesting responses, as you can well imagine. But as a rule, saying "God is powerful" tends to stump the Fundies, so mostly it's been a respectful set of comments.

I have lots of friends and family with whom I can't discuss religion or politics. As you say, sometimes it isn't worth it.

"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?"

(I'm assuming this quote really is from Epicurus, despite the single god referred to. The Greeks were polytheists but used "god" rhetorically to refer to divinity in general.)

Greeks often said "the god" or something like that. As to his point, I do not believe in an activist God: I figure we were created. But after that, we are responsible for each other and deal with the consequences of our own actions.
