We'll Probably Get the Feinstein AWB, Does it Go Far Enough?

WASHINGTON -- In the wake of Friday's mass killing at an elementary school in Connecticut, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said Sunday that she plans to introduce an assault weapons ban bill on the first day of the new Congress.

"I'm going to introduce in the Senate, and the same bill will be introduced in the House -- a bill to ban assault weapons," Feinstein said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

...

"Who needs these military-style assault weapons? Who needs an ammunition feeding device capable of holding 100 rounds?" Feinstein wrote on her campaign website. "These weapons are not for hunting deer -- they’re for hunting people."

On Sunday Feinstein laid out details of the bill.

"It will ban the sale, the transfer, the importation and the possession, not retroactively, but prospectively," and ban the sale of clips of more than ten bullets, Feinstein said. "The purpose of this bill is to get... weapons of war off the streets."

I say we also do big Buy-Back programs and motivate sales with a slow-to-activate complete ban.

NO it doesn't. Whole issue needs to be reframed. but 10% of something is better than 100% of nothing graham4anything Dec 2012 #1

I think an ammo ban and some improvement to NICS will be the end result if anything actually does happen

i forgot to put that word in

I look at the whole thing this way- if legislation is going to be passed it is going to be a comprimise of some sort. If the starting position is the AWB in all likelihood the result will be something more watered down with some provisions of the AWB included in it. I feel the magazine ban has the best chance of being that piece that does get incorporated.

Maybe no magazines larger than offered with the weapon, no extended magazine for handguns. Improved NICS is no brainer, but there will be strings attached

it will make the 2010 election look like a Communist take over. The President's whole agenda will be undone and any hopes we had to make any progress in the next two years will be deader that reagan.

Push this POS through and we'll lose the Senate and get a veto-proof republican majority in the House in 2014.

putting something anything to a vote in the senate that didn't get filibustered would be a positive step. Either way anything that isn't about the fiscal cliff would at least be interesting to talk about. It would also put more pressure on the house to hold a vote on it. My guess is the Republicans will not let an up or down vote to occur.

The new Congress hasn't even come into office, and most of the Republicans are from relatively safe districts that still support gun rights. very unlikely that an AWB will pass.
