7 mass shootings in 2012 alone

Don't know if someone already posted this. Here is a link to the timeline of mass shootings in the US since Columbine.

http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/12/14/1337221/a-timeline-of-mass-shootings-in-the-us-since-columbine/?mobile=nc

The rate of people killed by guns in the US is 19.5 times higher than similar high-income countries in the world. In the last 30 years since 1982, America has mourned at least 61 mass murders.

edit: 8, including Sandy Hook elementary school.

1. It's weird: this kind of killing *is* increasing, while every other kind is getting more rare

I don't get that at all.

There was an old theory of criminology that there's a "base" level of violence in any population, and stopping it in location A just means it appears instead in location B. People today call it the "wallpaper theory" (think air bubbles in wallpaper) but I think it's widely discredited; maybe we need to look at it again.

as a population increases so will the number of violent crimes. The odds just become better. Probably why countries with larger populations don't allow an unlimited number of firearms.. India and China to start with.

5. There is actually less violence but more mass killings....

One of the main reason the rate of violent acts have dropped is because the US took as much lead out of the environment as possible.

There is also some stats that after the legalization of Abortion, unwanted children were not born and thus there are fewer alienated people roaming the streets.

But hey, you know, getting rid of the squeegee guys in NYC is what really changed the tide...

4. The problem is the increase in loneliness.

The number of close friends people have is decreasing, which sounds weird in light of Facebook, but it isn't a true friendship being built.

People are being alienated from one another, it is a general trend that happened before big tech, but is getting worse.

The problem is that these would be the people you feel safe going crazy around, these would be the ones who'd look out for you and make sure you sought treatment.

If you don't have them in your life, just how does that happen?
