General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsEven in "enlightened" enclaves like DU, we can have a forum for guns & killing, but not sex
What does that say about us as a culture?
Even us, here at this site?
In other words, we have a forum where plenty of gun porn has been posted -- loving, rapturous descriptions of all the "new equipment" being bought, pictures being posted, etc.
You can talk about your hunting trips, and killing deer, boar, and all manner of critters (hopefully you're eating them, though)
But a forum where a loving, rapturous picture of naked body can be posted!? Where the masturbation is actual masturbation, and not just displaced to gun lust? No no no!
That would be "raunchy" and "seedy" and somehow bad.
Killing and killing machines: Good!
Fucking and naked bodies: Bad!
Even here.

(36,827 posts)It has more to do with a culture that is fine with openly glorifying violence, but openly glorifying sex is forbidden. Your comments and reaction prove his point. It would be preposterous to have a porn forum here, but if you think about it, it's even more preposterous to have a violence "porn" forum. Yet we do.
Evergreen Emerald
(13,069 posts)And I think it depends on your definition of porn. A forum on guns is different than a forum on violence. A forum on sex is very different than a forum on porn.

(26,001 posts)The point is why is one acceptable, and the other isn't?
Guns are "political?" So is sex.
Gun laws get debated? So do sex laws.
But why is it AOK for someone to post some loving ode to a killing machine, but a loving ode to a device that gives you orgasms.. would be alert material?

(19,926 posts)That's the point of the OP.
I don't go into the gun forum but I am alarmed that people on this board would defend assault weapons and semi-automatic/autmatic weapons that are in no way used for hunting and have no good purpose in the hands of private citizens, especially when they can be obtained without permits and background checks.

(19,926 posts)I don't want a porn forum here, but I'd like to not have a gun forum either.

(66 posts)I've always thought that the reason sex (or sexually charged images/conversation/experimentation) is made to seem so forbidden or dirty in our culture by certain media strategies and institutions is to allow us to think we are doing something "dangerous" and "wild". By making everything titillating, we stay always in half-arousal and distraction. It's just another thing to keep us from throwing down our tools and taking to the streets for legitimate change and progress.

(26,001 posts)In other words, it may be more than just distraction.
I mean, if everyone were basically spiritually and physically happy all the time (agreed that sex and the institutions around it are set up so that we always seem to be "malnourished" in that regard, even while being overwhelmed with titillation), that would be dangerous to society's architects and owners.
Which must be part of the reason it's okay for us to kill each other, instead.

(4,517 posts)I never really understood the 'no sex thread' aspect. I suspect it's because this website isn't limited to 18+, thus they could run afoul of some very nasty anti-pedophilia laws if they allow it.
But it would give us a place to dump the quarterly circumcision threads.
