That's the argument I hear a lot, but I have one major problem with that. At the shooting of Gabby Giffords there were a couple of people in the crowd who were armed, but didn't fire because they were afraid they would shoot someone else on accident. So, how would arming teachers help? The risk of shooting one of the children would have been too high. Stricter gun laws and more regulations would do a lot more than arming teachers.

(66 posts)We do not need guns in the classroom, that is so completely ridiculous. In addition to the previous reasons provided, is it not possible that some individual who also happens to be a teacher could go off the rails and use the weapon provided to them?
More guns is most definitely not the answer.

(6,238 posts)The state legislature tried to pass a law allowing guns on colleges campuses. It didn't pass, thank God. Still, it worries me that someone actually thought proposing it was a good idea. We do allow guns in bars for some inane reason I can't figure out.

HARROLD, Texas A tiny Texas district will allow teachers and staff members to carry concealed firearms to deter and protect against school shootings when classes begin this month, provided the gun-toting employees follow certain requirements.
<snip>
Trustees approved the policy change last year. For employees to carry a pistol, they must have a Texas license to carry a concealed handgun; must be authorized to carry by the district; must receive training in crisis management and hostile situations; and must (use) ammunition designed to minimize the risk of ricocheting bullets.

Another advantage is, school staff would be more likely than police responders to recognize students and fellow school employees. And of course, staff would be immediately available to protect schoolchildren from an attacker.
Would it have made a difference if the Sandy Hook School Principal, Vice Principal, and psychiatrist had been armed? I think there is a good chance that it could have.
