DH had an old hunting rifle and got rid of it as soon as we had our first baby. Didn't want it in the house. Seemed like a no-brainer decision at the time.

In AK at the time with a bear rifle. Child learned guns aren't toys and to never ever assume one was empty.

stronger locks and door frames. Security window film, CCTV and alarm systems. Pepper spray and blunt objects for close encounters.

It's a choice you've made and one that everyone can respect.

and how easy it would be. I had a beautiful yellow lab with epilepsy, but whose seizures were extremely intermittent. Yet the startling noises I would awaken to when she first developed those seizures, would surely have had me brandishing a gun against a suspected prowler, had I had one.

How easy it would be to shoot a loved one by mistake....Beyond incomprehensible....

From the time I was tiny he made sure we kids knew that you NEVER pointed a gun at anyone or anything that you did not fully intend to kill.

We had no toy guns. My dad did not take his guns out and show them off, nor did he engage in weenie wagging by having conversations with others about who had what guns. They were tools to him - DANGEROUS tools - they were NOT penis extensions. He was in the military, too. But he saw no need to act macho - about guns or anything else for that matter. His favorite car of all we had was his little Subaru 4WD wagon, and the VW Beetle was a close second.

i remember reading sometime back that a large percent of people who are killed produce the weapon they are killed with.

At any rate I don't need a gun in my life. Ever again
