SC Newspaper does an OOPS post "Guns from Santa" next to Memorial for Newtown Slayings

The Herald Newspaper Features Huge Gun Ad Next To Story Of Sandy Hook School Shooting

The Herald, a South Carolina newspaper, has issued an apology after prominently featuring an advertisement for a gun sale adjacent to a story about Friday's mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

The advertisement, for Nichols Store in Rock Hill, S.C., features images of several Smith & Wesson handguns and an AR-15 assault rifle.

NBC News reported on Friday that "an AR-15-type rifle" was found at Sandy Hook Elementary School, but it was unclear whether it was used in the massacre. According to The New York Times, the gunman "brought four guns to the school," including two rifles and Sig Sauer and Glock pistols.

The Herald's editor called the ad's placement "inadvertent" and "a terrible mistake."

"But we at The Herald should have recognized the unfortunate juxtaposition of the advertisement with stories and a photograph about gun violence," the newspaper's editor, Paul Osmundson, wrote in a column on Saturday. "Multiple editors worked on the page and should have noticed the problem. We all made a terrible mistake, and for that I apologize."

It's pathetic, but at the same time it may enrage some people to take action against the gun lobbyist and the NRA.

...but, still...I wonder how this could ever have appeared. Why didn't ANYONE CHECK IT?

It's dreadful..and I wonder how many other Newspapers all over the US in GUN ADVOCATE places ran the same ad next to the Memorial of the Names of those Innocents and did the NRA have a hand in this...?

I think that pretty well sums up what we're dealing with.

4. It is difficult to move a color ad that's an odd size like that one.

Also, depending on the layout program, the person putting the page together may not see what the ad actually is until it's too late. It would be very unusual for a copy editor/designer to do something like that on purpose. I find it odd when something like this becomes "news."
