How did we let a crazy minority of gun owners control things?

The vast majority of gun owner are ok with tighter gun controls this one included. Yet, for some inexplicable reason, gun policy in this country has primarily been set by conservative, rural/suburban white men afraid that people with my skin tone are going swoop down from cities, with our pants hanging low in order to rob them. But these people a very vocal, but small part of the country how did we end up letting them run things?

It takes reading some conservative blogs to really understand what the 2nd Amendment fetish is really all about for hardcore conservatives.

As usual, it's about race, and tied in with their opposition to spending on behalf of the needy. It's the belief that they are John Galt, their tax dollars are supporting the welfare state--which to them, basically means minorities in inner cities. And that when they finally shrug, shrink government down to the size of a bathtub, and head off to Galt's Gulch in body and/or spirit, the helpless masses of subhumans will throng to their doorstep to redistribute their wealth. And when that day comes, that's, of course, what the guns are for. In fact, they're looking forward to it.

Case in point: take the following seemingly innocuous thread at conservative community blog Free Republic. The thread is taken from a Yahoo News article titled "GOP Spending Cuts Would Affect Millions of People", and really exposes what lies at the heart and intersection of the conservative anti-welfare, pro-gun fetishism.

"Better lay in some extra ammo, though, if you live near a major urban area.....the Dem voterbase will be heading to the suburbs to take what they believe that they have a "Right" to........"

"My guess is that the REAL "trouble" will start when the welfare checks stop going out.
If you live in a major urban area, lock and load ‘cause I suspect it WILL be a target-rich environment."

"...the Dem voterbase will be heading to the suburbs to take what they believe that they have a "Right" to........
I’ll deliver what they deserve, 9mm from a MAC-11. 900 RPM."

This isn't just one thread at Free Republic, either. Delve into the comments section of any conservative blog, or of any major newspaper, or at FoxNews.com, and you can find plenty more where that came from.

Also: we (liberal communities) embrace largely unrestricted speech, allowing us to be targeted by right-wing trolls whose entire purpose is to break our resolve on this issue.

Congress Approves Gun Shield Law

Congress gave the gun lobby its top legislative priority Thursday, passing a bill that would protect the firearms industry from massive lawsuits brought by crime victims.

President Bush wasted no time commending the House for passing the "Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act," CBS News correspondent Peter Maer reports.

In a written statement, Mr. Bush said, "Our laws should punish criminals who use guns to commit crimes, not law-abiding manufacturers of lawful products." He said he looks forward to signing the bill into law.

The House voted 283-144 in favor of the bill after supporters, led by the National Rifle Association, proclaimed it vital to protect the industry from being bankrupted by huge jury awards. Opponents, waging a tough battle against growing public support for the legislation, called it proof of the gun lobby's power over the Republican-controlled Congress.
