Dave Letterman gets serious on his show tonight

He did a monologue.

He went to the first commercial break.

Then, when he came back, he started in on the Newtown shootings.

He ruminated about his own kid, not much older than the kids who were shot.

Then he pointed out there have 70 school shootings since thew Brady Bill was signed.

He read quotes from Obama's remarks from last night.

He gave Obama props. He lauded him for being on the record as supporting us "doing something."

His audience was hused and respectful. At the end the applause was as one might expect for the organist and soloist at a wake.

Then he went to break again. This is longest non comedy things I think I have ever seen on late night comedy television. And I have been watching late night comedy television since Jack Paar was around.

I like Dave. He's almost always on the right side of things.

I bet there were people crying in that audience, too.

He was the first one to make a joke about the iraq war and how we needed to know that when we wrote the checks, Halliburton has two "LL"s, like hell. He became a hero to me that night and what he did last night is just more proof that he is one of the good guys.

He had Dan Rather on as a guest.
I haven't looked at it since I recorded it.

in a long time. I was a big Dave follower in his halcyon NBC days. He has always been smart as well as funny.

Letterman has always seemed like he was one of the good guys - he should have been the Tonight Show host, but the Late Show is better in every aspect. It's great to see him do something like this.

Especially when he eulogized his father:

He also did an entire show with Desmond Tutu:

Not to take away from David Letterman. I just wanted to note that Craig has been on the cusp in late night television for a long time now.
