White House: changing inflation calculation a 'technical change'

Dec 18 (Reuters) - The White House said on Tuesday that a proposal to change inflation adjustments to Social Security benefits would affect other government programs that use the government's Consumer Price Index as an inflation gauge.

The proposal was part of an effort by President Barack Obama to compromise on deficit reduction issues in the ongoing "fiscal cliff" talks, spokesman Jay Carney told reporters.

But he characterized the change, requested by Republicans, as "technical," and said a clause in Obama's fiscal cliff plan would protect the elderly and other vulnerable groups from harsh adjustments to Social Security benefit payments.

Or are they agreeing on point by point?

It seems to me that they are just throwing stuff against the wall to see if the other will react.

I can't imagine Obama would go against a huge majority of people who do NOT want him messing with SS, Medicare and Medicaid.

Do they still have a ceiling on what salary an employee reaches when the SS deduction is no longer deducted? It's been so many years since I worked, I've lost track. If there is a cut-off, raise it.

Is there a cut-off by wage rate for benefits after retirement? If so, lower it. Millionaires don't need SS nor Medicare, for that matter.

My other comment is that they should not be hitting the SS ping-pong ball like this, as it scares the elderly that are living on the bare minimum as it is. They will lose their faith in all government if they take what little money they get away from them.

Once the Repugs win on SS, they'll keep eroding it until it's gone.

It's an outrage! How do we fight this? Obama said he wouldn't touch SS...this is a broken promise!
SS isn't keeping up with inflation as it is...how can he cut it more by this devious method?

I can't keep up with the raising cost of oil, gas & food and everything under the sun. How will we live on the future lesser rates?

Obama is pretty smart and Boehner can't stay ahead of him. He tends to wave the carrot in front of their nose and then traps them, so I'm going to wait it out and see how it all filters down.

It may even be a trade-off for something better. Keep the faith. This is just a ping-pong game between the two...I think.

I also know he isn't going to do everything the way I think it should be done. I feel that he looks at and weighs the whole picture on these issues that people are screaming about, with the hope that in the end, things will come out better than we expected.

There has to be give and take in this stupid game of politics and I, like the rest of you, cheer him on when he stands his ground and says NO! But, he can't do that all the time or it loses its affect.

I think we have to state our opinion/sign petitions and write letters/emails. Beyond that, we can only trust that he will do what he feels is best. We don't have the horrible load he carries every day NOR the obstruction he has had to live with for the last 4 years. Until I walk in his shoes, I can't be that critical.

We criticize him for what he does wrong...how many times do we thank him for doing something right?

A chained CPI affects many other programs and vulnerable groups apart from Social Security recipients. By advocating its use at all, Durbin is saying,

Fuck the disabled. Fuck veterans. Fuck federal retirees.

What a disgusting charade from self-described "Democrats."

In an interview with me this morning, Senator Dick Durbin, a top ally of the White House, told me he opposes including Chained CPI in the final deal unless it completely exempts Social Security.

In other words, bring on the chained CPI for other programs, and enable the fucking of the disabled, veterans, and federal retirees.

The argument that a reduction in benefits would be offset by an increase in tax revenue from high-income earners also falls short. Switching to the Chained CPI to adjust annual income tax brackets would lead to incomes jumping to higher brackets faster, or in other words, tax increases. Congress’ non-partisan Joint Committee on Taxation showed that if income taxes were indexed to the Chained CPI starting in January of 2013, by 2021, 69 percent of the gains in revenue would come from taxpayers with incomes below $100,000. Those taxpayers with incomes between $10,000 and $20,000 would see an increased tax burden of 14.5 percent while those with incomes over $1,000,000 would only see their taxes go up by 0.1 percent.

How does that "technical" change stack up, 10, 20 years down the line? Just because the people it will affect then are not a "vulnerable group" now doesn't mean they won't be once they get old enough to receive SS and Medicare benefits.
