Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWhat about outing people who have flake weapons?
What if there were a place you could go to simply post the full name and other information about people with flake weapons, weapons caches, and so forth? Then employers could search for the names of prospective employees and rule out the ones who might be weapon flakes. Parents could find out if their kids were going to a home with a weapon flake in it. It might even help law enforcement identify criminals.
I'm thinking most of these people with AR-15s and AKs wouldn't want everyone to know about it. The impracticality of it would outweigh the cool pretty fast.
Here you go, Julian Assange.

(13,186 posts)The idea is to let a lot of beholders decide what they are willing to tolerate and what makes their skin crawl. For me, I listed a couple of examples, the AK and AR-15.

(30,252 posts)Here we're supposed to be talking about crime prevention - and then this happens. "Name and shame?" Hell and no.

(13,186 posts)It doesn't hold water. True, Joe Schmo might have an AR-15 burglarized, but I think the criminals can already get what they need. And Joe Schmo already bragged about his AR-15 to a bunch of folks. And who says that Joe isn't a criminal himself. Maybe the cops would like to know he has an AR-15.
I realize it's a bit incendiary, but my suggestion does make a point I think.

(60,567 posts)...Repugnant. Fucked up like a football bat. Like Gladys Kravitz with a tap on all of her neighbors' phones and infrared cameras aimed at their bedroom windows.
Mind your own business.

(13,186 posts)You wouldn't have to post the names of anyone. Other people might want to. I tend to categorize flake weapon ownership with child pornography, animal cruelty, etc. I actually think most flake weapon owners probably derive a lot of silly pleasure from pushing the envelope of the secrecy taboo. But this subject is bigger than that.
If someone posted "so and so has two twelve gauges, a deer rifle, and a .357 magnum" I doubt it would have much effect. But if they posted "so and so has an AR-15," then I think "so and so" might get fired the next day...or encouraged to leave.

(154,021 posts)This falls in the same fringe category as Governor Perry going, "the solution is to arm the teachers."

(13,186 posts)I'm talking about a private site and individual citizens making the decision to post the names of the people who own weapons they would prefer others not to know about. And then it would be individual citizens deciding to shun or accept the people with the weapons. The Fourth Amendment and the Second Amendment don't come into play.

(154,021 posts)If somebody steals the weapon and commits a crime with it.
It is fringe. There are far better solutions.
O'Reilly, stuck clock and all, accidentally bumped into one today, and there is precedent as well.
He said they should be registered with the FBI. I forgive him for not knowing the right agency, ATF. 1934 and 1968 and how we dealt with full auto guns are the precedent.
Read into it...legally owning a tommy gun is a real PITA and what can I say? Just getting cleared to own a Tommy is a royal pain. That alone has greatly reduced ownership.

(54,770 posts)It can be legal, but still immoral. The promotion of guns by folks who can't walk into a restaurant without one tucked away, is the latter.

(54,770 posts)Don't need a registry to know who pushes spirit of law to satisfy their need for lethal weapons. One can spot em walking down the street.
Enjoy your guns.

(22,695 posts)it reads as a bad pun and possibly an enigmatic insult. A double entendre that uses a word which in slang not only means oddball but implies one who behaves in an odd or eccentric manner. It would not be my choice of words as it seemingly insults those on the fringes of society like the severe to profoundly mentally ill. IMHO. LMSP

(22,144 posts)Consider this...About half the homes in the US have firearms in them. Pick the ones one either side and report one of them.
gulliver
(13,186 posts)Anyone could do that. I'm for banning assault weapons, but I think a true social nightmare visited upon the owners courtesy of the Internet might be more effective. Might hurt the market for these things.

(184 posts)And lifestyle to be used as a discriminator in employment, education and other important life areas. Yeah.. What could possibly go wrong with that?
gulliver
(13,186 posts)Yes, I think if people want to have the weapons, then I want to know about it in the same way I want to know about someone who molests children or fights dogs. Owning an AR-15? Is that as bad as fighting dogs? No. Some people might not fire you for owning an AR-15. I would, but others might not. It's their right to decide.
This is the path we are on anyway. All these AR-15s that are flying off the shelves now will be flying into landfills as keeping them private becomes less and less possible in the Internet age.
letemrot
(184 posts)Their gay neighbors or Muslim or open marriage couples, swingers etc? None of which is illegal; but there are nuts who find any/all that 'morally questionable.' Would you support those sites as well? As long as its not the government doing it, of course?
gulliver
(13,186 posts)People are getting more and more tolerant of things that were once "morally questionable." We are getting more practical. There is a practical difference between a flake neighbor who has a cache of weapons and one who is a swinger, and people are starting to get that.

(184 posts)I'm curious to see how it plays out.. And what your reaction will be to all the various 'outing' websites that pop up in response. As you said, it's all legal activities; and it won't be the government doing it.

(17,493 posts)posting the name and info about someone who owned assault style rifles could lead to these weapons being stolen by a criminal and then resold to someone who would use them to murder.

(13,186 posts)Again, folks would have the legal right to do whatever is legal. They just wouldn't be able to keep their gun information private. Not because the government was doing it mind you, but because people on the Internet of their own free will would be doing it. It would not be stoppable.

I want to start a website about the most outrageous, goofy, asinine posts ever posted on the world wide web, and use their real names, addresses, phone numbers and *especially* their places of employment, so other good, smart people don't accidentally do business with that company for fear that the asinine goofiness may somehow rub off on them!
Please provide the requested information ASAP!! so I can get my project started!
