I didn't even have to click on the link to remember it--I've thought of that picture with the bike many times over the years.

Maybe if there'd been an Internet back then, or 24-hour news channels (I can't remember whether CNN was around then but I think they only ran the news in 30-minute cycles, not breaking-news-style coverage), something might have been done.

What has shocked me even more profoundly in almost 30 years that have passed is this country's unhinged gun-humping response and ever-more strident embrace of firearm nuttery.
