(56,582 posts)The NRA, at Rob William's request, helped him and his neighbors form militias to defend themselves from white supremacist terrorism in the 1950s.

As Rick said . . .
"One frequently cited reason, given to me by a number of black firearm owners, is the perception that blacks feel that they would not be welcome . . ."
" I will readily admit that the NRA has not made any significant progress or inroads towards increasing the number of black people in the organization and at its annual conventions. My attendance at the conference last week in St. Louis was my second NRA national convention. By my own personal accounting, I met twelve (12) black persons in attendance at the conference in St. Louis. I may have missed a few but not many.
Previously, I had attended the 2010 meeting in Charlotte. Sadly, I must report that both aforementioned events lacked significant participation by black people."
not rick-
Now thats what I call understatement. Twelve African Americans at a convention with over 73,700 attendees

(5 posts)is green. They really don't represent their member. They represent the interests of the companies that make guns.

(12,072 posts)The NRA 4.3 million members vote on the Board of Directors. If they are unhappy with the board, they will replace them as they did once before. So the NRA does represent the members. But the desires of the members, to be able to buy guns, compliments the desires of the gun manufacturers, to sell guns. So there is no conflict between the members and the companies.

(20,631 posts)received so much support in Congress was because the Dixiecrats were freaking out over the idea of a good number of those involved in some of the "race riots" in the northern cities of the 1960s having easy access to firearms!
