This was a video the City of Houston released to teach people to respond to an "active shooter" in the workplace. It was produced with federal grants and was released in August.
Notice how quickly the gunman takes out the (armed) security guard. First one he goes for.
Notice that fighting back was considered the action of last resort. First and second resorts were to run (get outside) or hide. Fighting should only be considered a last resort.

(28,498 posts)I work at a public library, about 16 miles away from that theater. It could easily happen in my workplace.

Check out "Flatpicker's" post. Tell him how it'll never happen.
Incredible, just incredible.

(9 posts)DU seems to think that "nobody" needs a gun for self defense, or an armed good guy could "never" stop an armed good guy, and so on.

(68,644 posts)you lose your social security benefits?
Or your workplace is the target of one of these mass shootings.

(8,086 posts)And I'll take on each of these issues, one at a time.
I think minimizing or mocking the possibility of a workplace shooting is a pretty callous thing to do, all things considered. But maybe that's just me.

(2,720 posts)...so your implication that being pro-gun on the DU gets you banned is, to be charitable, false.

I have been trained, and have Iraq experience in, what we called 'turn and burn'.
Turn towards the enemy. Advance while firing to own the real estate between you and the bad guy.
In all sincerity, I've taken an oath, twice, to protect the citizens of this country. Its the only oath Im under, even declining to "swear in" with my ironworkers local. There is no difference to me in dying in some fucking armpit of the world for some elusive political reason, or dying trying to stop a maniac so that somebody else can escape. Crazy that Ive had this conversation with my wife? nope. She was a soldier too.
So yeah, there's a reason not much stock is put into this 'an armed good guy can stop a bad guy' thing. You will stop and think about what you have to lose. Ive already thought about that. Ive already put it all on the line for 16 months straight over there.
And Ive proven already that I dont think in these situations, I react. As Ive been trained to do.

(9 posts)There are countless examples out there of "untrained" firearm owners who were very successful in stopping the bad guy with their gun, often without having to fire any shots. The problem is rarely do these incidents make the news, much less national headlines.
Perhaps you need training to be able to always run towards the bad guy without thinking about the consequences. But you definitely don't need training to be able to know to pull the trigger when the bad guy comes towards you because otherwise you'll die.

I think THAT would reduce workplace stress, that's what I think!

(9 posts)In which case yes, "fighting back" with fists or a chair or fire extinguisher against an armed attacker would obviously be considered the action of last resort.
Notice it's not real footage either, or the end all be all answer for how to handle such a situation - every one is going to be different.

(1,415 posts)There was what they call in Texas a "30.06" sign it's illegal to carry a gun there. No law-abiding person would have a gun. Not making a judgement call either way, just stating a fact.

(26,219 posts)Years ago, I worked at a bank that was robbed in a morning/opening robbery. When the police arrived, they found a teller sitting on the robber, pinning him down in the floor of the vault - beating the ever loving shit out of him.
Yes, she was hormonal - she was 7 months pregnant at the time (which is my favorite punchline to the story). She was also terminated that same day for not following bank procedure and cooperating with the robber.
I have an issue with not knowing where that line is in following procedure and protecting one's life. Rule of thumb I was given was if they try to physically relocate me from a location. (Kidnap me from home to open the vault, kidnap me from the bank after a robbery, etc...)
bobclark86
(1,415 posts)They had an employee pull a gun on a robber. He got fired. As I learned at McDonalds in high school, my life (and the associated insurance risk to the company) is worth more than the $75.29 in the drawer. A bank is federally insured, your life is not (generally).

(17,865 posts)pump action shotgun and not a 30 or 100 round magazine. I live in dread of someone opening up with such a weapon in a large crowd (like the movie theatre in which thankfully, in Denver, the gun with the 100 round drum jammed).

I hope he got a refund -- and if the gun wasn't made in America, it REALLY serves him right!
