The hard-core NRA people are going to vote for the GOP no matter what. They believe the Dems are coming to take their guns. Despite the fact that in his first term Obama only expanded the ability of people to carry guns in federal parks and other places they still believe he's going to come get their guns.

Like many right wing organizations the NRA chooses to ignore facts and trade on propaganda. The Dems need to simply ignore them. Go ahead and work on better gun safety laws. The NRA is not as powerful an organization as it would have you believe. They pretty much spent a lot of money in elections 2012 and lost their ass. People of the US don't vote based on who can own a gun these days. A gun is so far removed from most people's lives the NRA is irrelevant.

We are increasingly an urban society where guns really have no place and no one feels the need to own one. Fewer and fewer people hunt anymore. That's why the gun manufacturers sell the semi-auto rifles to so many males with a penis problem. It's not about hunting anymore, it's about manhood. If you don't believe me then look no farther than the "Man Card" issued by the manufacturers of the Bushmaster Semi-Auto Rifle.

These people, by the way, are the same people who would volunteer to protect your children under LaPierre's shield. The same sort of people as George Zimmerman who shot an unarmed kid. Zimmerman tried to become law enforcement but failed the tests. He could probably become an armed security guard at your kid's school though. Do you want someone with his level of decision-making skills around your kids with a gun?
