All I Want for Christmas...By William Rivers Pitt
Truthout.org |Op-Ed
Tuesday 25 December 2012
I want Wayne LaPierre to sit in a room with the families of the victims of the Newtown massacre and explain to them his grand theories on further arming our hyper-armed society. I will not get that wish, however, because Wayne LaPierre is a cowardly blowhard who gives "press conferences" where no questions are allowed.
I want those children to be alive on Christmas morning. I want those teachers to be alive. I want Adam Lanza to be alive. I want his mother to be alive. I want her guns to be un-bought, sitting in a gun store display case gathering dust, forever unloaded.
Early on Christmas Eve morning, a man outside of Rochester set fire to a house and waited with his firearm for firefighters to arrive. When they did, the man shot four of them, killing two and wounding two severely, before killing himself. Because of the gunshots, the fire could not be dealt with, and several neighboring houses also burned.
I want those two dead firefighters to be alive on Christmas morning, those two wounded firefighters to be unharmed, I want the shooter alive, those houses unburnt, and I want someone to explain to me how a man who would set a trap for firefighters by burning down his own house got his hands on a gun, and why that is the definition of American freedom.
I want Wayne LaPierre to be in a roomful of firemen when he announces the solution to problems like this is to arm firefighters. I want to watch what happens next.

(53,410 posts)Because I think he's got a psychological problem. Paranoia, Schitzophrenia, or he's a sociopath or psychopath.
And his guns should be taken away from him. Essentially he advocates for the death of children. How the hell does anyone in our society get away with that?

(24,324 posts)Schizophrenia? I doubt it. Paranoia? we all have a little so the question is.. how far does his go? Psychopath? I don't think so?
Sociopath? Most likely.
Definitely deep-seated inability to carry 2 opposing ideas in his head at the same time.

(4,253 posts)What was the nervous condition that got him out of serving his country during. Vietnam? . His doctor had to sign him off. HE should not be able to own a gun.

(1,361 posts)The same way McChimp, Rummy, Cheney, Kochs, Norquest..... you can add your own names to the list, sleep.
Their sleep is interrupted by thoughts of how their portfolio is doing... or if they will be able to keep their jobs, or if enough of the American people wake up to understand what pieces of shit they are....
Beyond that, they sleep quite well, thank you.

(10,044 posts)This man needs a thorough mental examination to find out why he is unable to feel sorrow or guilt or anger at the killings - only feels pity for himself.
Lots of folks have guns who don't agree with the NRA, God bless'em...maybe they're not insane.

(48,121 posts)I want to confront those people, but usually we cannot.
I want to prevent these types of things and to understand why some people, a SMALL minority, do what they do.
I don't want to blame tools/weapons/etc - I want to know why the very few use them in a way most never would.
But we don't talk about that, because that is a lot more difficult. Takes more work and maybe we don't want the answers to that why.
I don't want to work each day and have my taxes pay for drones and wars where kids are killed and so few make care enough to make ops/write articles about it.

(4,522 posts)I want an end to Fear - fear that makes people want guns to protect themselves, or be like their favorite hero, or worse. I want and end to having to worry about nuts with guns, guns on TV/Movies/24/7 guns guns guns.
I want an end of Fear of people in other parts of the world, fear of the US in other parts of the world. Wars. Greed.
I want an end of Fear that we are becoming divided at the very time we need to come together to deal with issues like climate change, inequality, hunger etc.

(4,889 posts)Before reading this post I watched Oliver Stone's Untold History of the US on TV. This week's installment was about the VietNam years and I have to ask: Have we learned anything? I seems to me we are almost exactly where we were then concerning our violent society. Sometimes I wonder, are most of our leaders also sociopaths or is our country as a whole sociopathic? Can we not play well with each other or the rest of the world?

(7,581 posts)All excited that Santa is coming with presents for them, and that is when it really hit me that this monster killed kids young enough to believe in Santa and pure goodness. This is still just so incomprehensible to me. Sigh.

(8,646 posts)I had a rather somber Christmas compared to normal. All I could think of was those parents whose hearts are broken, probably trying to have a 'normal' Christmas for the sake of the siblings, and I couldn't stop hugging my kids (who were quite annoyed with me all day) and wondering how on earth I would cope with that.
It's all so horrible. I think the public reaction has shaken me to my core as well. Things are now officially more important than people according to a large part of the population. You even see it in this thread. Those sweet, innocent kids who had presents under the tree waiting...those sweet babies who never got to open their gifts...I had to choke back tears a good part of the day today (yesterday, I guess since it's after midnight now).

(51,662 posts)While we were getting Christmas dinner ready, a male group of my in-laws decided to go to a shooting range to pass the time until dinner was ready. First, I was shocked that a shooting range would even be open on Christmas, but even more shocked that anyone I know would want to go to a shooting range on Christmas. These folks are not Adam Lanza crazy, but they are the type of folks that eat up the drivel that comes out of Wayne LaPeirre's mouth. I guess that's why he keeps saying it.
