Chicago marks 500 homicides

http://www.chicagotribune.com/

Nathaniel Jackson's death earned him the unfortunate distinction of being the 500th homicide victim in Chicago this year, a grim milestone the city reached for the first time in four years. "There's no such thing as an acceptable murder number. Even if we cut it down to 300 next year, it's still unacceptable," said police Superintendent Garry McCarthy.

We lived in Hyde Park (U of Chicago) in the 70s and I remember yearly homicide rate of more than 900!

Perhaps things got better since then and now, especially with the hard economic conditions, have deteriorated.
