When they made his skin tone several shades darker they got careless and included his eyes, a telltale giveaway that also darkened the whites. Look at the startling contrast in the blue-tinted shirt that is intended to make him look even darker.

In advertising, the subliminal visual messaging being sent to the targeted audience is just as important -- if not more so! -- as the text. By placing the image of a dark, scowling, angry-black-man on the left, or sinister side, in Western cultures this evokes long standing cultural influences suggesting an ominous and evil threat pointed at the kindly old, white grandfatherly figure on the dexter, or favorable right side.

I hate this stuff, but Fox uses cheap tricks like this all the time because it is an effective means of double-branding their messaging.
