Do we start all over? How much influence does McConnell have over Boehner and the House Repugs? Is the vote in the House wired - meaning - do they have the votes already counted and know it will pass or is it going to be a crapshoot?

(36,437 posts)from the new GOP House will be played out.
Remember, one of the major reasons that the current deal is BAD BAD BAD is because without it, the GOP House would be so over a barrel that they would absolutely positively HAVE TO ACCEDE TO EVERY PROGRESSIVE DEMAND, or they would disappear into thin air! In the magical speculative world, the GOP HOuse would suddenly fall to its knees in the face of public pressure and give us middle class tax decreases no questions asked, because, well, because that's the story we've told ourselves! And dammit, we like that story. The one about magically getting everything we want from the otherwise fanatically recalcitrant House GOP!
Or, if they don't, so what anyway, because we should all go back to the Clinton era rates anyway, and stop whining about paying another $100-$200 out of each paycheck, middle class American! Or something.
But we wil get a chance to see this magical world unfold before us, where all we have to do is hold hands and jump, and everything we want comes to us in a magical rainbow of happiness!

Nice fucking "big tent" attitude you've got there. Very "Democratic" of you.

(12,530 posts)There's a contingent here who insists that the base of the party is actually the fringe. They also think it's a good idea to start negotiations in the middle, then work their way over to the right. So you're being insulted by someone who deserves pity more than anything else.

(36,437 posts)I didn't insult anyone.
Besides, the progressive base voted for Obama in stronger numbers (in some cases) than 2008, despite the dire predictions and threats by the people who claim to speak for it here. So I wouldn't equate the DU "progressives" with the actual progressive base of the Party.

(14,524 posts)... that they actually represent a significant portion of Democrats, we ALL know that's bullshit. They are nothing more than retched infiltrators from the scumbag right.
But ignore them, I will not. I want the bastards out of The Democratic Party and back where they came from, the Greedy Old Positively worthless Party.

(36,437 posts)Talk about not having the courage of your convictions!
If you're referring to me, just say so. This roundabout way is very cowardly, in my view.
Besides, this "retched" infiltrator has been a member 6 years longer than you have, friend.
Why you so mad for?

(36,437 posts)YOU don't think I'm a right wing scumbag infiltrator, I'll be happy. I suppose the jury might still be out on that, though.
You'd have to admit that almost eight years as a member is pretty good for a scumbag right wing infiltrator, though!
Happy new year to you and yours!

(12,530 posts)From some of your posts though, including those I noticed in other threads, you're not real fond of progressives. But no, I know you're not an infiltrator, and I suspect we may have some of the same goals, even if we disagree about how to achieve them.

(36,437 posts)Indeed, I think I am probably farther to the left than most people on this board philosophically. Everybody who knows me in real life would laugh their asses off at the notion that I've been pigeonholed as a centrist Dem anti-progressive on a a political message board. I've read the goddamn Grundrisse for fuck's sake.
I think we are in a very difficult climate for the left and for progressives, and in such climates we must make sure that we are above all reducing harm to vulnerable populations. That is my pragmatist position. The course we're taking is full of faults and dangers, but the other courses are full of catastrophe and danger. That's the shit we're stuck with. We have to maneuver for both harm reduction and social change in a complex political environment. I'm doing that to the best of my ability, rhetorically and otherwise.
I have no problem with DU progressives. I have a different understanding of the optimal pragmatic route for harm reduction and social change in a deeply reactionary environment.
