I have to eat some fine crow.

Glad to chow down on it.

I never thought the President would be able to get the toothpaste back in the tube but he may have ended the crazy payroll tax holiday and that is real strengthening of our safety net.

If you notice that money then keep it ever present in your mind and politics that is an important piece of your retirement, a real sacrifice and that you pay triple that. Another quarter directly and two as part of your total compensation cost so protect it like a mother bear would her cubs. Make damn sure that it will be there and expands with time.

Protect that investment!

Thank you Mr. President! If folks learn to value what they put in maybe the program will really be secure and beneficial for generations to come.

I would also add that by separating the whole tax issue out and make the Republicans carry the water on WHAT they want cut and insisting from the beginning that any cuts will have to be balanced with FURTHER revenue that the President has indeed "moved the goal posts" as the Republicans are now crying about.

I think that they will learn that the latter they agree with him the less they get.

They will soon be reminiscing about plan B.

It will still be bad though. We are operating within a false premise and acting in a broadly counter-productive manner.

We need more demand, not chipping and cutting one of the few sources.

Good harm mitigation once you put yourself into the crazy position, but the entire premise should have been and fought to the death.

the longer the holiday continues the less people have going into their SS accounts. It may hurt a little now but in the end it helps.

Is a massive loss of disposable income for those working at America's largest employers. Perhaps not in raw dollars -- they don't see many of those anyway -- but as percentage of their income. We permanently extended the 'temporary' tax cut on those earning tens of thousands a month, and shanked the temporary tax cut for the poorest Americans. Good trade there -- if you are wealthy.

The truly sad thing is that we are ending this holiday and going back to collecting the cash, but once chained CPI goes through (now that it is Democrats proposing it, it will) by the time those same workers retire their benefit wont be worth anything.

No chained cpi, no raising the retirement age. Let's see if this will hold true two months from now.
