(9,901 posts)I've always assumed that the Republican party was America's far right party.

(111,342 posts)to the point that 2016 might be nasty enough that they can't field a candidate for president. Don't scoff, it's happened before.
The Reagan coalition of the rich and the crazy/stupid is finally breaking down. The Nixon coalition of the rich with the bigoted is still largely there, but stone bigots have been dying off and younger voters (the ones under 60 or so) often can't understand what the big fuss was about.
The religiously insane and insanely stupid are going to stomp off and form their own party with entirely predictable consequences. Don't expect much but hot air. The Republicans will continue on as a local party, continuing to foul Congress in dwindling numbers for at least a couple of decades.
Eventually, we'll get a viable second party, one generally forms around an important single issue. Single payer health care and getting the military off our backs are a couple of issues that are large enough.

(14,115 posts)In a couple of decades I'll be in my 80's and I can die in peace, knowing the Rethug Party is a bad memory. Here's to your vision! I sincerely hope it all comes to pass.

(111,342 posts)sold its soul to the devil to grab power.
The Federalist Party sold its soul to the growing plutocracy and while the infusion of big money allowed it to buy votes, the voters didn't stay bought when it became apparent what the screw job was and finally rebelled as delegates.
The Whigs sold their souls to the pro slavery part of the country, and the Abolitionists mounted a total rebellion within it. That convention actually did feature a few fistfights, and the party failed to nominate its incumbent.
Both parties sputtered on for a couple of decades as regional parties and both were eventually supplanted by single issue parties that the Hamiltonians took over once the issue was resolved.
The Republicans are going the way of their predecessors. They might have survived the Nixon coalition, but there is no way they will survive the Reagan coalition.
However, don't break out the champagne. With nowhere else to turn, the mainstream economic wingnuts will only foul our own party up. The Libertarians are too rigid and unprepared to accept them.

(62,444 posts)...on one of their threads bemoaning the fact that the president is not confined to quarters, I guess, and his return to Hawaii:
"Anyway we can legally keep him their during hurricane & tsunami seasons?
When is Mona Loa going to blow again?"
What's especially brilliant about this guy is that he thinks Hawaii gets hurricanes, and that tsunamis have "seasons". That guy fucking aced earth science AND English.
And as for that last bit, I guess he is proud to be Ms. Loa's son.
