Bummer

Just got off the phone with an old friend. She got fired today. Stunned doesn't begin to describe how she's feeling. In her mid-50s, she has never been fired before. She's one of those solid, nose-to-the-grindstone, reliable types. She's a top rated CPA, her skills are excellent, she'll at least be able to find temporary work with tax season coming up.

The company didn't fault her work, they blamed Obamacare. Being the bookkeeper she knows that's a crock. But it still galls.

We'll be having coffee tomorrow. I'll mostly provide two ears to listen. But if you can think of anything to say that might be comforting, I'm listening now. Damn.

She's over 50 and they fired her because they claim they can't afford to insure her? dflprincess Jan 2013 #1

I'd talk to a lawyer about an age discrimination suit.

No matter what they "said" it is discrimination, and she knows it. Talk her into getting an attorney ASAP. Waiting only makes it harder as they will be less able to cover anything up if she does something about it right away. Really feel for her. Fired has other implications, like making it near to i,possible to get UI benefits, and if she does get them it will take a lot of time and energy on her part to fight for them.
