Today the Senate will make history, swearing in a record-breaking 20 female senators 16 Democrats and 4 Republicans in office.

"I can't tell you the joy that I feel in my heart to look at these 20 gifted and talented women from two different parties, different zip codes to fill this room," Sen. Barbara Mikulksi, D-Md., said while surrounded by the group of women senators. "In all of American history only 16 women had served. Now there are 20 of us."

(3,411 posts)Even Uganda, the notoriously anti-gay country, has a legislature that is 35% women. Rwanda has the highest percentage of lower house members that are women, about 56%. Andorra has one legislative body, that is 50% women.
Saudi Arabia, one of our "good" allies, has NO women in their legislature, and thus backs the idea that Saudi Arabia is one of the worst countries in the world for women's rights. In fact, they are:
"Women in Saudi Arabia are treated as lifelong dependents, under the guardianship of a male relative. Deprived of the right to drive a car or mix with men publicly, they are confined to strictly segregated lives on pain of severe punishment."
