We can't each do everything, we can't be involved in every issue. But we can do something. Maybe one thing.

(10,745 posts)And there are people out there, like Bill McKibben, for example, who are doing their very best to help make a better world possible. And I salute them for it.

(10,745 posts)As Herculean of a task as it may seem at times, mitigating global warming is not impossible. Loads and loads of scientific research has been done that shows us how it can be done. Really, it's not at all a question of "Can we do it?", but "when will we do it?". And time is of the essence if we want a good chance of avoiding a 2-3*C temperature rise by 2100 or so.

(11,700 posts)When you think about it that way it kind of makes all of our self-important problems and squabbles and wars seem trivial doesn't it? We're apes with too much intelligence and no common sense. It's too late to change our course. Homosapiens will keep going the direction we're headed until this planet is destroyed and we cease to exist. If there were beings from other worlds observing us, that would have to be their conclusion.

(10,745 posts)Yes, we have a problem to deal with, a ginormous one, and one that has proven to be tough to solve. But to say that we will cease to exist? The honest truth is, reality says otherwise, even if a select few people really DO want us to disappear.

(13,661 posts)Honest to god, if there were fewer of us rampaging about this planet, Earth would be in much better shape.

(10,745 posts)Humans per se? No, not really. It IS, however, certain things that we are doing, that are causing problems. I'm not just talking about Co2 output.....the problem is much deeper than that; it's also deforestation, strip mining, mountaintop removal, and, yes, even ground pollution is a problem(such as what has sometimes occurred with fracking).
But calling us an "invasive species", while understandable to a point, isn't quite helping us get the word out. I would much rather let facts do the talking.....what we really need, are more presentations like "Chasing Ice" I haven't seen it yet, btw, but I would love to!), and more people like our own GreenMan and the Skeptical Science guys(and far less like David Wasdell and Guy McPherson for that matter!), laying out actual science.

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel *, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
They took all the trees
Put 'em in a tree museum *
And they charged the people
A dollar and a half just to see 'em
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
Hey farmer farmer
Put away that DDT * now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees
Please!
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
Late last night
I heard the screen door slam
And a big yellow taxi
Took away my old man
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
The song was written about Hawaii. If you go to the site,it will tell you the history about the Pink Hotel and the Tree Museum. Interesting.
