S.F. begins charging for Sunday parking

A 65-year-old tradition died quietly this weekend, when for the first time, San Francisco started requiring drivers throughout the city to feed parking meters on Sundays.

The tradition's end came so quietly, in fact, that many drivers didn't notice.

Now most do. And the city doesn't want the streets in its commercial districts to turn into parking lots on Sundays. Meters force drivers to move their cars, freeing up spots throughout the day.

The change could also discourage some people from driving on Sundays, perhaps nudging them onto mass transit instead. And of course it will bring the city's cash-strapped Municipal Transportation Agency more money - about $2 million per year. The city's parking meters already generate about $47 million per year.
