Ticketmaster Screws Up The Inaugural Ball Tickets - All Were Sold By Accident!

The 2013 Presidential Inauguration Committee issued the following email at 3:29 PM Sunday afternoon:

Friend --

Thanks for your interest in attending The Inaugural Ball on January 21st in D.C.

As there are a limited number of tickets available, I'm writing to let you know the next steps in the ticketing process.

Tomorrow, Monday, January 7th, you'll receive an email from Ticketmaster with a unique link.

Don't delete this email! The process is first-come, first-served, so be sure to look out for that email and purchase your tickets right away if you want to attend.

If tickets are still available when you see your email, your link will enable you to buy up to two tickets for $60 each.

Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that everyone will be able to buy a ticket.

The Inaugural Ball is on the evening of January 21st at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center here in Washington, D.C. Attire is black tie.

Hope to see you there, and if I don't, there are so many other ways to get involved with this historic event -- check them all out at our website, and thanks for being part of the inauguration no matter what.

Thanks again,

Julianna

P.S. -- You will also be able to buy Inaugural Parade tickets for $25 each via your unique Ticketmaster link tomorrow.

Ticketmaster followed up with this lame apology for their gross incompetence today at 12:14AM, sent by the Inaugruation Committee:

Good evening.

During testing of our email system tonight, you may have inadvertently received an invitation to purchase tickets for 2013 Inauguration events, including the Inaugural Ball or the Inaugural Parade.

Public tickets to these events were originally scheduled to go on sale tomorrow morning – you received the email tonight in error, and Ticketmaster takes responsibility for this mistake.

However, a significant number of public tickets were purchased this evening, despite the early email. Ticketmaster will be in touch with any additional information.

All public tickets are first-come, first-served, including those sold tonight. There is no guarantee that you will be able to purchase a ticket at any time.

Thank you for your understanding.

I tried to log on and was notified that my account was locked because all tickets were sold!

Thanks for the heads up when we left to visit family and have dinner.

Not only did Ticketmaster send out the email early, they also unlocked the ticket sales early too!

Then they issue the lame Ticketmaster takes responsibility for this mistake line. LIKE WHAT RESPONSIBILITY?

Responsibility would be voiding and reissuing the tickets with the proper notice. Offering free tickets to those who were wrongly offered them. But that would cost money. It's cheaper just to say you take 'RESPONSIBILITY' than to actually take it!

2. I was hoping for a chance to go with my 18-year-old daughter as a Father-Daughter event.

With everyone's hectic schedules, and having multiple children, it's difficult to get to spend quality one-on-one time with a child. This would have been a memorable occasion - something that we would remember forever. I'm just a little saddened by it. I was staying local all week, in the hopes of receiving the notification. When I thought things were OK to leave the house for an extended period... along comes Ticketmaster to drop the ball.

3. Speaking of "dropping the ball" can I offer you a suggestion?

Go to one of the Inaugural Balls instead. Some of them are very relaxed. Many are a fun time, even if the drinks are pricey and it's more standing around than actual dancing. POTUS and FLOTUS will likely make an appearance at most if not all of them (I'm betting the Bidens will turn up here and there as well), and you'll get a better view of 'em than you would from the stands. You can also line the parade route and see the parade if the weather isn't awful.

I'd also check to see if they are going to put up a jumbotron on the mall, or something. You could watch with a crowd and be part of history even from a distance.

In sum, I'd go anyway if you had your heart set on it--do you have a place to stay or do you live near enough? Or do you have an RV and can park at a Walmart? Don't be afraid to go a bit far afield to get a hotel room, it's not too hard getting around the DC-VA-MD area.

You only live once--don't let these assholes ruin your plans.

4. Wow. Why can't they cancel those orders and issue refunds (if people have already been charged)?

Lots of companies do just that when they screw up with a sale or an order.

You often see it when some place like Amazon or Best Buy accidentally lists an item that's supposed to be $2000 for $20. Word gets around, a ton of people order it. What happens? All those orders get cancelled.

But I suppose because they're making the same amount no matter when the tickets went on sale, it doesn't matter to them. They have no real financial incentive to correct it. And Ticketmaster has a virtual monopoly in the ticketing business, so it would be difficult to "vote with your wallet".

I hate Ticketmaster.

5. my advice (based on my 2008 experience)

Call your Congressman and ask for tickets to the inauguration ceremony - so you stand closer. Find a great restaurant to go to afterwards and then go home/to you hotel. Magnificent experience; life changing.

Skip the ball. I found the ball to be a large crush of people, no tables to rest at; very little food and hard to get a drink.
