We'll know soon enough whether former Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) is President Obama's choice to lead the Pentagon, but it's clear that Senate Republicans intend to give him the Susan Rice treatment if his nomination reaches the chamber. For the GOP, their former colleague is a radical liberal who's anti-Israel and pro-Iran. John McCain said last week that Hagel isn't even a Republican by his standards.
"I'd be honored to have Chuck with me in any capacity," McCain told the New York Times in 2006. "He'd make a great secretary of state." [...]
McCain also said it was good that Obama chose to bring Hagel to Iraq, because even though the two Vietnam veterans had developed opposing views on the Iraq war, McCain said Hagel "has military experience (and) knowledge of these issues." He also said Hagel was a "respected leader in America" who "served his country admirably, with honor and distinction."
When Hagel departed the Senate in 2008, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) praised his "clear voice on foreign policy and national security" and his "stature as a leading voice in foreign affairs." Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) added that Hagel "understands the world better than almost anyone."
The larger dynamic is hard to miss: Republicans liked Hagel quite a bit, right up until Obama said he agreed with them.

Since the rushpublicans can't win national elections they feel compelled to do all they can to make government as dysfunctional as possible. The hopes are the more it doesn't work the more apathetic the electorate will get...get pissed at President Obama for not delivering ponies and stay home, again, in 2014 that will help them take the Senate and totally screw up the country. It's true slash and burn of not just their corrupt and inept party but to the country on the whole. It's all for personal and political gain.
Gramps is still pissed about the '08 election and seems his only purpose for remaining in Washington to be a pain in everyone's ass. He doesn't care how hypocritical he sounds...he's got scores to settle and Hagel is on that list. His tantrums give cover to the rest of the party who are worried about their great unhinged...getting on the wrong side of rushbo and the teabaggers and facing primaries. Thus this was all but to be expected...and modus operandi for the next two years...non-stop constant obstructions and attempts to make people hate government.
Looks like the White House is now ready for a fight...these confirmation hearings could be doozies...
