Question about credit cards that offer rental car insurance coverage......

We all know how confusing and expensive rental car companies make it for the consumer when insuring the car you're renting. The cost of fully insuring the vehicle usually exceeds the cost of the rental itself.

I have several credit cards that provide the benefit of paying for insurance on rental cars when one of those particular credit cards is used to pay for the rental.

My question is: Does this rental car insurance provided by the credit card company cover all three types of insurance that the rental car companies are always trying to get us to purchase? Or is there some catch?

Typically it covers collision only, if it covers anything. But read or call beforehand to make sure. reformist2 Jan 2013 #2

they can make you pay for the time that they were not able to rent out the damaged car.

It actually can be a good deal since collision coverage costs something like $15-20 a day with the rental agencies.

....is that when you try to get any info out of the people from the rental car company regarding rental insurance provided by a credit card, they all roll their eyes into the back of their heads and mumble something like "i dunno what the credit card insurance is covers, but if you take our coverage and you get in an accident, you just walk away with no liability. either accept our coverage or initial here, here and here if you want to decline our coverage".

you would think with an issue as important as automobile insurance on the cars they are renting to the public, they would have worked out all the details between themselves and the CC companies to make sure the consumer knows what the hell they need to do.

My auto insurance covers me when I am driving a rental car. My agent told me that kind of coverage is not uncommon, and that a lot of drivers buy that rental car company insurance because they don't KNOW their regular insurance covers them.

I've had people tell me they don't want to have their regular insurance company involved if they have an accident in a rental car, but I have to say I'd much rather be dealing with my agent, and my insurance company if anything ever did happen...

Almost all insurance transfers over when you rent a car.

I never but the rental companies "extra" coverage. It's just a waste of money since you're already paying an insurance company.
