94-year-old escapes hospital for birthday beer

A 94-year-old pensioner broke out of hospital in Munich so he could belatedly celebrate his birthday in one of the German city's famous beer halls, police said Thursday.

A passer-by noticed the elderly man at an underground rail station on Wednesday as he still had an intravenous drip needle implanted in his left hand.

He took the slightly dazed man to transport authorities who called the police.

"After several calls, it emerged that the pensioner had bolted from a Munich clinic," police said in a statement. "He himself said he was on his way to a beer hall to have a belated birthday celebration."

Police said the man was then returned to the hospital, where doctors agreed to allow him to have the tall, frothy beverage of his choice.

This was in Vienna. They had a pretty good meal and then coffee, torte and schnapps for dessert.
He held up his glass of schnapps and said "My doctor thinks I should do this any more. I'm a 100 years old and I'll do what I damn well please"

Hafbrauhaus. I drank two of their tankards of beer. My sis & I were headed out of town afterwards. We hopped on the train, but promptly fell asleep. We missed our stop.

I worked with her in a nursing home. Frisky and very opionated woman, who ate very well, but was still all of about 5 feet and 100 lbs. She loved her SWEETS. Her Great-Granddaughter liked baking her cookies, but a few staff members thought they were "not good for her". Hey, you live to be about 100 years old, you get the right to eat whatever you want!!!!!

And I definitely second the book recommendation. We read it in our book circle last year, and it's still the most liked book we've ever read. I just saw it was translated into English not long ago.

And beer is good for you.

Besides, German beer-halls can be quite beautiful.

Happy birthday, Herr Perseverance!

I hope he makes a full recovery from whatever landed him in the hospital and that he enjoys many more glasses of beer.

home where she lived. She was sitting at a table by herself, so my wife and I sat down with her and talked to her. Shortly after we sat down, she looked at me and said, "Well, are you going to bring me some cake?" I brought her some cake. Somewhat stricken with dementia, she still had some conversational abilities and knew what she wanted. She also got a cup of coffee with plenty of sugar and cream.

She died not long after that, but I was very pleased to have had a chance to meet her and go get her a piece of cake on her 100th birthday.

Note: I did check with a caregiver before supplying that cake. The caregiver said, "Oh, Marie. Of course. She can have anything she likes."
