Anyone remember Sen. Kerry's 1988 report "Drugs, Law Enforcement and Foreign Policy"

http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB2/storm.htm

>>

Although many readers of the Mercury News articles may not have known it, "Dark Alliance" is not the first reported link between the contra war and drug smuggling. More than a decade ago, allegations surfaced that contra forces, organized by the CIA to overthrow the Sandinista government in Nicaragua, were consorting with drug smugglers with the knowledge of U.S. officials. The Associated Press broke the first such story on December 20, 1985. The AP's Robert Parry and Brian Barger reported that three contra groups "have engaged in cocaine trafficking, in part to help finance their war against Nicaragua." Dramatic as it was, that story almost didn't run, because of pressure by Reagan administration officials (see "Narco-Terrorism: A Tale of Two Stories" CJR, September/October, 1986). Indeed, the White House waged a concerted behind-the-scenes campaign to besmirch the professionalism of Parry and Barger and to discredit all reporting on the contras and drugs.

Whether the campaign was the cause or not, coverage was minimal. While regional papers like the San Francisco Examiner--which ran a June 23, 1986 front-page exposé on Norvin Meneses, a central figure in the Mercury News series--broke significant ground on contra-drug connections, the larger papers and networks (with the exception of CBS) devoted few resources to the issue. The attitude of the mainstream press was typified during the November 1987 press conference held to release the final report of the Congressional Joint Iran-Contra Committees. When an investigative reporter rose to ask the lead counsel of the committees whether the lawmakers had come across any connection between the contras and drug-smuggling, a New York Times correspondent screamed derisively at him from across the aisle: "Why don't you ask a serious question?"

Even when a special Senate subcommittee on Terrorism, Narcotics, and International Operations, chaired by Senator John Kerry, released its long-awaited report, Drugs, Law Enforcement and Foreign Policy, big-media coverage constituted little more than a collective yawn. The 1,166-page report--it covered not only the covert operations against Nicaragua, but also relations with Panama, Haiti, the Bahamas, and other countries involved in the drug trade--was the first to document U.S. knowledge of, and tolerance for, drug smuggling under the guise of national security. "In the name of supporting the contras," the Kerry Committee concluded in a sad but stunning indictment, officials "abandoned the responsibility our government has for protecting our citizens from all threats to their security and well-being."

I don't buy into most CTs...but Parry is not a CT nut...

One thing that came across 'loud and clear' in this book is that these coverups would not have worked without the compliance of the Dems in congress. Only Kerry stood tall...no wonder they worked so hard to defeat his presidential run. I almost laughed when I read how the newly sworn in Clinton administration went along with burying the the investigation...How did the rethugs thank Clinton...they impeached him! Dems never seem to learn.

Since Gary Webb’s suicide four years ago, I have written annual retrospectives about the late journalist’s important contribution to the historical record -- he forced devastating admissions from the CIA about drug trafficking by the Nicaraguan contra rebels under the protection of the Reagan administration in the 1980s...

Sadly, many Democrats are still completely unaware of the reports that defined the real IranContra, BCCI and CIA drug-running investigations. Lack of corporate media coverage has led to these years of investigation, sworn testimony, documents, and detailed reports being downplayed today as mere conspiracy theory.

it comes to the actual documentation of the crimes committed during these operations. They know the words "Iran Contra scandal" but, have no clue of its many layers and the details involved. Historian Harold Evans called IranContra the greatest crime spree against the US Constitution in history, yet, the powerful elite have succeeded in downplaying its significance.

Harold Evans is the author of the highly regarded book "The American Century" and is married to Tina Brown.

The Contras, Cocaine, and Covert Operations

National Security Archive Electronic Briefing Book No. 2
For more information contact:
202/994-7000 or nsarchiv@gwu.edu

Washington, D.C. – An August, 1996, series in the San Jose Mercury News by reporter Gary Webb linked the origins of crack cocaine in California to the contras, a guerrilla force backed by the Reagan administration that attacked Nicaragua's Sandinista government during the 1980s. Webb's series, "The Dark Alliance," has been the subject of intense media debate, and has focused attention on a foreign policy drug scandal that leaves many questions unanswered.

This electronic briefing book is compiled from declassified documents obtained by the National Security Archive, including the notebooks kept by NSC aide and Iran-contra figure Oliver North, electronic mail messages written by high-ranking Reagan administration officials, memos detailing the contra war effort, and FBI and DEA reports. The documents demonstrate official knowledge of drug operations, and collaboration with and protection of known drug traffickers. Court and hearing transcripts are also included.

which had Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs, both talked about the cocaine smuggling. One of them said that 'when our covert operators were in SE Asia, we had a big heroin epidemic, now they're in Central America, and we have a big cocaine epidemic.'

I have McCoy's 'Politics of Heroin in South East Asia'. Excellent book. Leslie Cockburn's 'Out of Control' was a good book on the CIA contra coke connection, but isn't indexed. One interesting story in that book showed the CIA trying to smear Kerry and his staff by planting drugs in a package, with a note from a Sandinista official to J.K' about the quality of the last shipment. Treasonous right wing clowns, would be laughable if there wasn't such a high body-count, domestic and foreign.

Because of how knowledgeable they are, I suppose.

I still don't back the DLC types, but I do admit that Sec. Clinton did a ton of work during her tenure, putting out repug-perpetrated brushfires all over the globe. The same treasonous repugs are going to do the same thing this term. He's very capable, but will have his work cut out for him.

The BCCI client list of nazis, intel, mob, terrorists was amazingly appalling. We got one 'clean up' term out of the massive Watergate scandals, then right back to insane criminal treason by the 'loyal opposition' party. Iran-Contra was the Watergate that 'never happened'. 5 terms of repug presidential scandals, with no clean up afterwards.

Did you see coverage of the 'collision' that claimed Teresa K.'s first husband, by any chance? A Sun Oil chopper ran it's rotor into the landing gear of Heinz's plane, 'to attempt to see if it was fully deployed', though that particular plane didn't have retractable landing gear. That's the official story. Heinz was very conservative, even more than Specter, but wasn't a bush partisan. Bush tried to put his flunky Thornburg into Heinz's Senate seat afterward, and bush flunky John Tower died in a plane crash immediately after Heinz's crash. Teresa quit the GOP soon afterward.

OLLIE NORTH AND DRUGS

By Dennis Bernstein and Howard Levine
From The Texas Observer

EXCERPT...

If Iran-Contra prosecutor Lawrence Walsh had wanted to know the extent of former Colonel Oliver North's involvement in the smuggling of drugs from Central America to the United States, Walsh might have made at least one phone call to Celerino 'Cele' Castillo in San Antonio.

Between 1985 to 1991, Castillo was the Drug Enforcement Administration's main agent in El Salvador, where, he says, he uncovered "and reported" a huge drug and gun smuggling operation that was run out of the Ilopango military airport by the 'North Network' and the CIA.

North, now the Republican nominee for the U. S. Senate in Virginia, prevailed at the nominating convention last weekend by positioning himself far to the right of his rival, former Reagan budget director James Miller III, promising that if elected he will work to "clean up the mess" in Washington, and cultivating the support of the same fundamentalist Christian Republicans who
responded to the direct-mail campaign to finance the North defense committee.

But Castillo, the first government official with first-hand knowledge of North's drug dealing to speak publicly about it, says North belongs in prison, not in the U.S. Senate. "We saw several packages of narcotics, we saw several boxes of U.S. currency, going from Ilopango to Panama," Castillo said.
