from Lamar Smith's website:

While I sympathize with the victims of Hurricane Sandy, Congress has already authorized $9.7 billion in emergency funding. But the $50 billion bill considered today includes additional spending far beyond emergency funds for Hurricane Sandy victims. Emergency spending bills should not be a vehicle for pet projects or even important programs. Those types of spending requests should be considered separately.

“Congress should wait and see how the already allocated $9.7 billion is spent before going back to the American taxpayers for additional funds."

Edit: TX rep in case you're wondering. How any coastal state rep could vote against this legislation is beyond me. Will try to find out what the pet projects are he mentions in the quote.

Congressman Jim Cooper(D?) TN-5th

His statement:

“I have great compassion for the victims of the Sandy disaster, which is why I voted “yes” on the first $9.7 billion bill that passed earlier this month.

“Congress should make at least some effort to pay for a portion of disaster relief. I voted for federal aid for Nashville flood recovery in 2010, and that bill was partially paid for. So were the Hurricane Katrina bills I supported. And Hurricane Rita, and Hurricane Wilma, and Hurricane Ivan, and Hurricane Isabel. Why can’t we find even partial offsets for Sandy?

Yesterday’s votes came during a national budget crisis while America is officially out of money.”

I'm not from TN. To all you who are, I'm sorry. Of course my Tea Party twit voted no, but I expect that, he's never shown decency or compassion for anyone. But this. The betrayal. Those of you who are in his district, please write and see if you can get a better explanation for his deep disregard for the suffering of the victims. He at least needs to know that you are watching and remembering who he is and what he's done.

...spended like a drunken sailor during the Bush years. Two wars, increasing defense spending, and massive tax cuts. And when the economy goes down and cuts revenue on top of that, leading to massive deficits? They blame the Democrats and social programs. Of course, you all knew this. Still, they keep on peddling this bullshit and noone goes and challenges them.

Mr. Rogers,

As one of your constituents, I must ask, what in the hell is wrong with you? Victims of natural disasters have never been denied congressional funding. EVER! Yet, you are trying your damndest to make that happen. When Katrina hit the Gulf coast, it was barely ten days before a relief bill was passed in congress. There was NO talk of offsets to pay for it. I was just passed. It's been over two months now and only just now is a relief package getting through for the Sandy victims.

What is the difference between the two? Location? That doesn't make sense. Amount? Quite similar, so that doesn't make sense either. Repbulican controlled congress? It was a republican house as well. Wait! There IS a difference...
We had a republican president during Katrina and a democratic president now... It's becoming clear....

The obvious political games being played by the republicans in this congress are pathetic. Your stated goal to oppose anything this administration tries to do is and has been reprehensible. The propensity of you and your party to hold up aid to our citizens while trying to make some ridiculous political point is, in the words of Daffy Duck, dispicable.

Please re-align yourself with your consitituents

Regards,
